The large house on the right belonged to George O’Brien in the mid-1800s. George was the brother of Edward O’Brien, who at one time owned 30 or 31vessels, believed to make him the largest ship owner in the U.S. The wooden sidewalk at the front of the photo led to a schoolhouse. Beyond the O’Brien house the road slopes down to the water.

Some of the buildings in Tenants Harbor were built of timber harvested along the James River in Virginia by St. George sailors.
