Turnpike Road, also known as Turnpike Drive, is located between the base of Mt. Megunticook and the edge of Megunticook Lake. The road connects the towns of Camden and Lincolnville. Daniel Barrett built this road as a “toll road” from 1802 to 1806. Allegedly he built it by rolling large rocks off the mountain and then filling in with dirt and debris. A wooden rail can be seen where the road is closest to the lake’s edge.  In this image, a horse and loaded wagon can be seen traveling north to Lincolnville.
