Chart Detail Showing Penobscot Bay
Detail of chart, The North Eastern Coast of North America, from New York to Cape Canso, including Sable Island, by Edmund Blunt, 1847.
Detail shows Penobscot Bay. This is about as accurate a chart that was available for navigation into and out of Penobscot Bay in the mid-19th century when shipping in the area was near its peak. Local sailors did not need a chart, and indeed probably did not bother with one. But it was enough for strangers to get a sense of the Bay, and it was used in conjunction with printed Sailing Directions which provided details about entering the various harbors and traversing the channels.
