It is serious enough for the great three-decked ship of the line in the foreground, flying the red signal of an Admiral of the Red, to shorten sail. She has double reefed her topsails and sent her upper yards and masts below to the deck. The heeling deck lets Buttersworth show the crew at work now taking in the lower sails, called courses. In the dim background, there is a smaller two-decked ship of the line. Another five vessels lie at anchor under the protection of the “Rock.”
