Today, the schooner Mattie, fully restored and carrying her original name Grace Bailey, looks better than ever. Her passenger-carrying days have come to outnumber her cargo carrying ones, and she’s sailed from Camden for over half of her long life. Here, her mainmast has been unstepped and her foresail is being unbent. That’s Camden Shipbuilding in the background, now Wayfarer Marine.

Mattie was built as Grace Bailey in 1882 on Long Island, New York. She arrived in Maine in 1919 and was used as a coaster until Capt. Frank Swift purchased her in 1939, about when this photo was taken.
