A portrait of Captain Frank I. Pendleton (1848-1915). He was the son of James Harvey and Esther Houston Pendleton. Pendleton captained four ships during his career; MARY L. CUSHING, NANCY PENDLETON, JOHN C. POTTER, and WILLIAM H. CONNOR. After retirement he was president of the Searsport National Savings Bank. He had also represented Searsport and surrounding towns in the Maine State Legislature. His portrait in the traditional samurai outfit was common among maritime visitors. The clothing was regarded as representative the strong and beautiful Japanese culture. The specific clothing was borrowed from a samurai class family, displaying their family “chop”, or character insignia on the lapel.
