Thomas Buttersworth, Jr., signed, c.1820. Buttersworth instantly places these three Royal Navy vessels in the Mediterranean by painting a Mediterranean xebec under the bowsprit of the two-decked ship of the line. In small squadrons like these, the large vessel provided the muscle, while the naval brig and even smaller cutter ahead of the brig provided speed and shoal draft for chasing small vessels and operating close to shore.
