James E. Buttersworth, signed. These vessels, running downwind in a breeze, have the big single topsails common to all ships prior to the 1860s. A studding sail, “stun sail”, is set on both vessels. Merchants’ house flags fly from both, but are unidentifiable. Like many of Buttersworth’s paintings, this looks a painting James Buttersworth did on speculation.
