Part 2- Traditional Fiber Arts Series: Abbie Clifford’s Stockings
March 3, 2022 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm$60
Hands-on History Workshop Session
This class will explore the world of Abbie Clifford, a sea captain’s wife from Stockton Springs, Maine, through her knitting. In the first session, we will examine a pair of Abbie’s hand-knit stockings that survive in the Penobscot Marine Museum’s collection and try out her lace design. The second session will focus on shaping stockings, using Abbie’s own techniques on a child-size pattern. A full-size pattern for Abbie’s stockings will be provided for participants who wish to tackle a complete reproduction. Participants can choose to also enroll in the Make-it-Modern Workshop which will update Abbie’s design to create a modern-day pair of socks to wear.\
Materials will be mailed to participants starting February 14th. Participants must provide their own scissors; all other materials are provided. Registration deadline for the Hands-on History workshop is February 16th.
A sailor, knitter, and historian, Libby Meier studies the material and social world of Maine ships. She cataloged many of PMM’s manuscript collections, including Abbie Clifford’s papers, as a project archivist in 2020 and 2021. She is currently assistant curator for the Hart Nautical Collections at the MIT Museum.
Workshop fee: $60
