The First Opium War of the early 1840s\, with British and Chinese fighting over the opium trade and Chinese sovereignty\, opened up Chinese ports to the world. Maine’s merchant mariners aboard Maine-built ships soon thereafter entered the Chinese import and export trade. The trade aboard Maine-built ships lasted into the turn of the 20th Century. DESCRIPTION:Photo by Kosti Ruohomaa \nKosti Comes Home: An Exhibit of Maritime Images\nAt Camden Public Library\n55 Main Street\, Camden\nApril 3- April 30\nOpening Reception: April 3 at 7:00 pm \nApril is Maritime Month and Penobscot Marine Museum will once again partner with the Camden Public Library and create an exhibit for the Picker Room. This is the first exhibit of Kosti Ruohomaa’s photographs since his archive arrived back in Maine last year. On April 3rd at 7:00 pm there will be an opening reception for the exhibit and an illustrated talk by Kosti’s biographer Deanna Bonner-Gantor.  \nDuring the age of the photo magazine\, Kosti was a rock star in the photography world. His photographs graced the cover of Life Magazine numerous times. Other major magazines such as Look\, National Geographic\, and Life used his photos regularly.  \nThis exhibit is much anticipated as Ruohomaa’s work has been locked away in a warehouse in New Jersey for the past 50 years. His photo agency\, Black Star\, donated his archive of negatives\, prints and contact sheets to Penobscot Marine Museum in the fall. The exhibit will focus on his Maine coastal and maritime work. Kosti Comes Home will be on exhibit through the month of April at the Camden Public Library.

DESCRIPTION:Painting of the Hongs of Canton\, Gift of The Dow Estate\, 1983.25.8 \nCamden Conference-Affiliated Talk\nFriday\, February 2\, 2018\, 5:30-7pm\nUniversity of Maine- Hutchinson Center\, Belfast \nThe topic of the 31st Annual Camden Conference is New World Disorder and America’s Future.  PMM’s curator\, Cipperly Good\, will speak at a Camden Conference-affiliated event about how she understands today’s economic globalist from a historic view.  Maine’s location in the far northeast of the United States\, serves as the perfect point of departure for sailing merchant ships pushed by the prevailing westerly winds and the flow of the Gulf Stream to trade ports in Europe and beyond. The location\, coupled with our rich timber reserves for shipbuilding and a workforce adept at navigating\, captaining and crewing the large cargo ships known as Downeasters\, made Maine ships and crew dominate in global shipping during the last half of the 19th century. It is said that a Maine merchant marine family was as likely to see their neighbors in far off Canton\, China\, as back home in Searsport\, Maine. This presentation will use primary source material\, artifacts and images from the Penobscot Marine Museum to track the Maine merchant marine in the global market\, when Downeasters were the global shippers. SUMMARY:Maine on Glass: The Early Twentieth Century in Glass Plate Photography An Illustrated Talk​
DESCRIPTION:Authors (left to right) Kevin Johnson\, Earle G. Shettleworth\, Jr.\, and Bill Bunting \nFascinating historic photographs taken from 1909 to 1950 of a Maine which has almost completely disappeared are the subject of the new book Maine on Glass: The Early Twentieth Century in Glass Plate Photography by Maine State Historian Earle G. Shettleworth\, Jr.\, Penobscot Marine Museum Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson\, and historian Bill Bunting.  The photographs were originally taken to be made into postcards during the postcard craze of the early 1900s when billions of postcards were mailed world-wide.  The photographs show Mainers at work and at play everywhere from lobster shacks and wilderness hunting camps\, to steam and sailing ships and grand hotels.  On Sunday\, January 29th at 2:00 pm\, Boothbay Railway Village presents an illustrated talk about Maine on Glass: The Early Twentieth Century in Glass Plate Photography with authors Earle G. Shettleworth\, Jr.\, Kevin Johnson\, and Bill Bunting.  The talk will take place inside the Museum’s 1847 Boothbay Town Hall.  Admission is free\, suggested donation of $5 appreciated. \nThe photographs in Maine on Glass: The Early Twentieth Century in Glass Plate Photography were taken by the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company\, a Belfast\, Maine company operated by R. Herman Cassens from 1909 to 1947.  The company produced real-photo postcards\, so-called because the cards were printed in darkrooms rather than on litho presses.  Cassens wanted to photograph rural towns and villages from Maine to California.  He did not achieve this dream but his company did produce more than 40\,000 glass plate negatives.  The Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company collection is now housed at Penobscot Marine Museum.

SUMMARY:Knowing Their Place: Two Stories (and the truth) About an African-American Settlement in Troy
DESCRIPTION:African-Americans have been in Maine since the very beginning of settlement.  In the 19th Century many lived side by side with their Euro-American neighbors\, but some were settled together in their own communities. People in the rural town of Troy have traditions about such a settlement\, said to have been large and self-sufficient at one time but now vanished. What was the reality of the place\, and what was its fate?  Unity College students interviewed Troy residents\, sought out old records\, and excavated the site of the original settlement to discover the stories–and the truth–about what happened to the African-Americans of rural Waldo County.  Chris Marshall is professor of anthropology at Unity College. He researches the ecology and historical archaeology of early Euro-and Afro-American settlers in the Central Maine back-country\, with emphasis on land-human interaction and landscape archaeology.
