SUMMARY:Volunteer Meeting for Twilight Tours
DESCRIPTION:The Penobscot Marine Museum is looking for volunteers to portray the spirits of historic sailors\, sea captains\, and their families at our outdoor October 13th Twilight Tours. Memorize a script or improvise your own persona! You can have fun with it or make it creepy as you share tragic stories with local ties of those lost at sea. All ages welcome\, children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. \nExamples of historical characters we’re looking to cast: \n\nEmma Pendleton Blanchard and Captain James M. Blanchard who were lost when a waterspout hit the bark TRAVATORE off Messina.\nThe children Joanna or Lincoln Colcord who lost their kitten Purr in 1892.\nClara B. Nickels who pursued an international opera career only to have her life cut short in 1880.\nCaptain John Herbert Colcord who was lost along with 3 other Searsport men when the ELIZABETH went down in San Francisco harbor.\nA passenger on the ROYAL TAR\, a steamer that wrecked while crossing Penobscot Bay with a cargo that included an elephant\, a tiger\, two camels\, and more!\n\nAttend the in-person meeting or contact Jeana for more information at jganskop@pmm-maine.org.

SUMMARY:Member Monday - The Colcord Collection with Cipperly Good and MP Bogan
DESCRIPTION:Joanna Carver Colcord and her brother Lincoln Ross Colcord were influential locally\, nationally\, and internationally in the first half of the Twentieth Century. We love them for co-founding Penobscot Marine Museum with other children of sea captains\, but in addition\, each made huge contributions to the literature and documentation of the American and global merchant marine. In their own rights\, Joanna was a noted social worker and Lincoln a political commentator. \nThanks to an impressive 114 cubic feet of archives related to the siblings donated between 2005 and 2021\, researchers can delve into the various topics of which the Colcords were experts. As the collection has been donated piecemeal\, it has been the job of Cipperly Good\, the Richard Saltonstall Jr. Curator of Maritime History\, and her crack team of volunteers to reorganize and rewrite the finding aid to provide better access to researchers. The most current volunteer to tackle the project is MP Bogan\, a retired book conservator. \nCipperly and MP will give a behind the scenes look at the Colcord Collection- highlighting some of their favorite finds while sorting the papers and giving a brief overview of how the collection was categorized by topic. \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate monthly Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. Topics vary every month—it’s a fun way to take a close look at items in our collections and get a peek behind the scenes at PMM. Not a member? Join here \n(Photo: Joanna Colcord corresponded with former sailors as she compiled a book of sea chanteys published under two different names: “Roll and Go” and “Songs of American Sailormen.”  One letter shares a sea chantey written for the Maine-built BENJAMIN F. PACKARD. Colcord Collection\, PMM 29-942)

SUMMARY:Member Monday - Kevin Johnson presents the Josh Curtis Collection
DESCRIPTION:Josh Curtis considered Searsport to be his home even though he lived away for most of his life. He was passionate about the town’s history and he collected historical photos and negatives. He also made photographs himself of the historic homes and he never missed a parade. His photo collection was donated to PMM in 2008 by his cousin Arthur. PMM Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson will share some of the most significant images from his collection and show what these views look like today. \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate monthly Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. Topics vary every month – it’s a fun way to take a close look at items in our collections and get a peek behind the scenes at PMM. \nFree for members. Not a member? Join here.

SUMMARY:Walking Tours - The Feds\, The Greeks\, and Those Delightful Victorians: A Searsport Architecture Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:What does the way a building looks say about when it was built\, how it was used\, and what people at that time thought was stylish? This tour uses buildings on the Penobscot Marine Museum campus to examine local architecture and the growth of the town of Searsport. Residents in the early 1800s chose Greek Revival and Federal architectural elements while the Victorians in the later 19th century embraced the Italianate style. Enjoy some local history as well as learning more about architectural elements that you will see here and can also be found throughout the Maine Coast and beyond. \nOur talented tour guides will lead you around our beautiful campus\, sharing fascinating stories and also allowing you time to visit several exhibits. Registration is encouraged. Click here to see available slots. \nRain or shine. SUMMARY:Jr. Adventurers - Signal Flags
DESCRIPTION:July 19th\, 11am-3pm \nHow would you talk to someone far away if you didn’t have a telephone? This Jr. Adventurers programming is all about signal flags. These weekly drop-in programs are designed for children and their families to have fun at the museum. Each will explore a different topic that relates to our exhibits. SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Pim Van Hemmen Discusses In Extremis | Historic Ships in America
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with his photography exhibit\, In Extremis: Historic Ships in America\, photographer Pim Van Hemmen will give an illustrated talk. His photographs\, printed very large on aluminum\, are stunning to say the least. They provide the viewer with the sense of scale and age of these ocean faring vessels. Each of the ships depicted have a story to tell and Van Hemmen has been on a quest to tell those stories through his photographs before the vessels head to the scrap yard or sink at their moorings. The photographs are not casual snapshots but rather meticulously thought through and planned. In his talk\, he will discuss his process which involves research\, planning\, permissions and of course timing as well as sharing more of his photographs and the stories that go with them. In Extremis has been generously sponsored by Sprague Energy. \nRegistration is required. Register here. If attending in person\, the talk will be held in the PMM Old Vestry located at 2 Church Street. \nPhoto: NS SAVANNAH\, the world’s first nuclear-powered merchant ship built as a showcase for President Eisenhower’s “Atoms for Peace” initiative\, Baltimore\, Maryland. SUMMARY:Opening Day Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the opening of a new season! During the event both our Main Street Gallery and our Old Vestry building will be open so you can check out two of our 2023 exhibits\, Working the Sea and In Extremis: Historic Ships in America. \nWorking the Sea features photographs from the museum’s National Fisherman and Atlantic Fishermen collections inspired by an upcoming photo book by long-time National Fisherman contributor Michael Crowley. This exhibit will run the duration of the 2023 season. Working the Sea has been generously sponsored by Diversified Communications. \nIn Extremis is photographer Pim Van Hemmen’s ongoing project to document America’s historic ships. Upon moving to the United States from the Netherlands\, Van Hemmen noted that relatively little attention is paid to our country’s maritime past and its historic vessels. In response\, he set out to create a visual record of this maritime past. The exhibit takes its name from the In Extremis doctrine\, which allows ship operators to take extreme measures to avoid imminent danger. The exhibit will run through August 5th\, with an illustrated talk by Van Hemmen on June 15th. In Extremis has been generously sponsored by Sprague Energy. \nPhoto: A dipnet full of scup\, or porgies\, rests on the trap boat gunwale as Tony Coccoro repeats the endless task of repairing tears in the weir net. Photograph by Milson Moore\, National Fisherman Collection\, LB2012.15.33.
