DESCRIPTION:After returning to Maine from Peru\, this summer’s Geiger Museum Exploration Intern Judson Thomas looked for connections within the Penobscot Marine Museum collection. He found four logbooks that mention Peru and he transcribed a portion of the 1863 logbook of the ship WELLFLEET kept by American captain\, Henry S. Rich\, of Bucksport\, ME. In this Member Monday\, Education Director Jeana Ganskop will share the process she and Judson went through to find a logbook and some interesting portions of the one Judson worked on. \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate monthly Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. Quiet days\, adventure\, tragedy\, and heroism each take their turn. This fourth installment of “Stories from the Spirits of Sea-Goers” features tales based on true experiences and recorded by Penobscot Marine Museum volunteers and staff. Some stories might be scary or inappropriate for young audiences. DESCRIPTION:Meet the spirits of those lost at sea – a ghost ship\, a waterspout\, Confederates\, yellow fever\, and a menagerie at the bottom of the ocean are just a few of the plots visitors may encounter on Twilight Tours. \nThis is an indoor evening event with volunteer actors stationed throughout our historic house. Timed tickets start every 10 minutes. Attendees will walk around the building to hear the stories presented by the actors. Pre-registration is encouraged\, walk-ins welcome. There will be a seated\, accessible presentation starting at 4pm. Tours will begin at 5pm. \nTours run 5pm-7pm. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an open house featuring our 2023 photo exhibit\, Sam Murfitt and Maine’s Working Waterfronts and our new permanent exhibit\, Rusticators on the Water. \nPhotographer Sam Murfitt has spent most of his life connected with the water—while making photographs\, building boats\, and working for fishing publications. For decades\, he has photographed fishermen\, their work\, and their boats\, and in that work\, has come to see their way of life as finite and fleeting. His images document that lifestyle and offer a window into Maine’s working waterfronts and boatbuilding traditions. Sam Murfitt and Maine’s Working Waterfronts has been generously sponsored by Hamilton Marine. \nWhen Rusticators flocked to Maine in the late 19th to mid-20th centuries\, they sought a rustic vacation to retreat from their busy city lives. To get on the water\, they commissioned locally-built small wooden boats: rowboats for exploration\, daysailers for picnics\, and racing boats for yacht club competitions. This exhibit showcases the Maine-built boats at the heart of the rusticating culture and explores their enduring impact. Rusticators on the Water has been generously supported by the Margaret E. Memorize a script or improvise your own persona! You can have fun with it or make it creepy as you share tragic stories with local ties of those lost at sea. Blanchard who were lost when a waterspout hit the bark TRAVATORE off Messina.\nThe children Joanna or Lincoln Colcord who lost their kitten Purr in 1892.\nClara B. SUMMARY:Member Monday - The Colcord Collection with Cipperly Good and MP Bogan
DESCRIPTION:Joanna Carver Colcord and her brother Lincoln Ross Colcord were influential locally\, nationally\, and internationally in the first half of the Twentieth Century. We love them for co-founding Penobscot Marine Museum with other children of sea captains\, but in addition\, each made huge contributions to the literature and documentation of the American and global merchant marine. In their own rights\, Joanna was a noted social worker and Lincoln a political commentator. \nThanks to an impressive 114 cubic feet of archives related to the siblings donated between 2005 and 2021\, researchers can delve into the various topics of which the Colcords were experts. As the collection has been donated piecemeal\, it has been the job of Cipperly Good\, the Richard Saltonstall Jr. Curator of Maritime History\, and her crack team of volunteers to reorganize and rewrite the finding aid to provide better access to researchers. The most current volunteer to tackle the project is MP Bogan\, a retired book conservator. \nCipperly and MP will give a behind the scenes look at the Colcord Collection- highlighting some of their favorite finds while sorting the papers and giving a brief overview of how the collection was categorized by topic. \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate monthly Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. Residents in the early 1800s chose Greek Revival and Federal architectural elements while the Victorians in the later 19th century embraced the Italianate style. Enjoy some local history as well as learning more about architectural elements that you will see here and can also be found throughout the Maine Coast and beyond. \nOur talented tour guides will lead you around our beautiful campus\, sharing fascinating stories and also allowing you time to visit several exhibits. Visit the FAINT ENDEAVOR\, a sailing dinghy once owned by White\, and enjoy Penobscot Marine Museum’s new exhibit\, “Rusticators on the Water!” Listen to fans read their favorite E. B. White passages\, from his New Yorker days to his classic children’s tales. Bring your own favorite reading and a picnic dinner and join in the fun! We will have 2 ½ hours of open mic night and look forward to hearing what parts of E. B. White’s writing really spoke to you.  \nFree\, suggested admission $5

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Pim Van Hemmen Discusses In Extremis | Historic Ships in America
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with his photography exhibit\, In Extremis: Historic Ships in America\, photographer Pim Van Hemmen will give an illustrated talk. His photographs\, printed very large on aluminum\, are stunning to say the least. They provide the viewer with the sense of scale and age of these ocean faring vessels. Each of the ships depicted have a story to tell and Van Hemmen has been on a quest to tell those stories through his photographs before the vessels head to the scrap yard or sink at their moorings. The photographs are not casual snapshots but rather meticulously thought through and planned. In his talk\, he will discuss his process which involves research\, planning\, permissions and of course timing as well as sharing more of his photographs and the stories that go with them. After spending time with an Intertribal Medicine Man in Nevada\, she became passionate about Indigenous issues and developed a serious interest in Indigenous History. \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate monthly Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members.
