DESCRIPTION:As a 2023 spring semester intern\, Delilah O’Heidhin’s project was to locate\, create a bibliography of\, and create a finding aid for Wabanaki items within the Penobscot Marine Museum.  This video is about a few Wabanaki items and what we can learn from them. \nDelilah O’Heidhin\, is a University of Southern Maine History Major graduating in December 2023. After spending time with an Intertribal Medicine Man in Nevada\, she became passionate about Indigenous issues and developed a serious interest in Indigenous History. \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate monthly Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the opening of a new season! During the event both our Main Street Gallery and our Old Vestry building will be open so you can check out two of our 2023 exhibits\, Working the Sea and In Extremis: Historic Ships in America. \nWorking the Sea features photographs from the museum’s National Fisherman and Atlantic Fishermen collections inspired by an upcoming photo book by long-time National Fisherman contributor Michael Crowley. This exhibit will run the duration of the 2023 season. Working the Sea has been generously sponsored by Diversified Communications. \nIn Extremis is photographer Pim Van Hemmen’s ongoing project to document America’s historic ships. Upon moving to the United States from the Netherlands\, Van Hemmen noted that relatively little attention is paid to our country’s maritime past and its historic vessels. In response\, he set out to create a visual record of this maritime past. The exhibit takes its name from the In Extremis doctrine\, which allows ship operators to take extreme measures to avoid imminent danger. SUMMARY:Maine’s First Ship
DESCRIPTION:October 21st\, 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, suggested admission $5\nReserve your tickets here. \nThe VIRGINIA was the first ocean-going vessel built by the English in North America. In 1607 King James I granted a land-use charter to the Virginia Company to establish permanent settlements in the New World. The Company offered two investment opportunities – one based in London and the other in Plymouth. The London-based company founded a colony which they called Jamestown\, in land we now call Virginia. The Plymouth-based company attempted a settlement at the mouth of the Kennebec River in what has become known as the Popham Colony. The settlers were unprepared for the harshness of the Maine winter and\, after 14 months\, gave up their colonial effort. During that period\, however\, the colonists constructed a “30 tonne” vessel with which they intended to explore the coastline of the New World for profitable resources for their investors. They named their ship VIRGINIA OF SAGADAHOC and\, when the settlement was abandoned in the summer of 1608\, the colonists sailed her back to England.  \nFor the past ten years volunteers in Bath\, Maine\, have been working with Maine’s First Ship to re-construct the VIRGINIA. In this program\, Jim Parmentier will share more about this incredible project. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, October 15th\n5-7pm\n$20 per family (up to 10 people)\nPre-registration is required \nWhen the ghosts come out! Meet the spirits of those lost at sea – a ghost ship\, a waterspout\, Confederates\, yellow fever\, and a menagerie at the bottom of the ocean are just a few of the plots visitors will encounter on Twilight Tours.  \nThis is an outdoor evening event with volunteer actors stationed in entranceways and other locations throughout our three acre campus. $20 tickets will cover your whole family (up to 10 people) and are timed to start every 10 minutes. Attendees will walk around the campus visiting the “ghosts” and hearing their stories. Pre-registration is required. SUMMARY:Hemp and American Maritime History
DESCRIPTION:October 14th\, 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, suggested admission $5\nReserve your tickets here. \nHemp has played a vital role in our history\, including maritime history. It was a part of daily life until the mid-20th century. This session will explore the history of Cannabis Sativa as an agricultural and industrial product\, as well as understanding the difference in the types of cannabis such as marijuana. \nPeter Friesen received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from New Mexico State University\, focusing on History with a minor in Anthropology. He went on to receive his master’s degree in public history in 2006. During his senior year at NMSU Peter decided to focus on a career in living history. He took an internship at Valley Forge National Historic Park\, where he interpreted in 3 rd person\, did black powder demonstrations\, helped the archaeologists dig\, and manned the visitor center desk. After graduating\, Peter decided to attend graduate school and focus on public history. While there he took part in a class called Time Traveling where he learned about first person interpretation. His degree plan included a research paper of journal length and quality and several hours interning at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival assisting the supply coordinator. His research paper titled Hemp\, History and Museums\, looked at how marijuana laws have affected public perception of hemp and how it is interpreted in living history museums. This led Peter to Colonial Williamsburg where he worked for two years finishing his research and completing a master’s degree. During this time\, he started to look for a living history museum that also incorporated agriculture\, which is how he came to be at HSMC. After his first year at HSMC\, he received the New Professional Travel Award for the National Council of Public History’s annual conference in Louisville\, KY where he presented his research on Hemp and Museums. Peter has continued his agricultural research to include tobacco\, apples\, livestock\, and other aspects of colonial farming life. Peter is also active in the larger museum profession. He has presented at several conferences and is currently on the board of directors for both the Association of Living History Farm and Agricultural museums and the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum. Peter also serves on the museum studies steering committee at St. Mary’s College of Maryland as well as teaching museum studies.

With in-depth archival materials and interviews with captains and crew\, maritime historians\, and passengers\, filmmaker Dan Lambert explores the history and evolution of Midcoast Maine’s majestic Windjammers while taking viewers on a voyage that captures the feeling of wind and sea spray and the unique thrill of traveling under sail-power. Following the film will be a panel discussion including the filmmaker Dan Lambert\, Chair and Co-Founder of the Sail Power and Steam Museum\, and others interviewed for the film or associated with the windjammers. This film is co-hosted by the Sail Power and Steam Museum.
