Rockland\, Maine \nMay 20th at 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, register here \nKosti Ruohomaa’s Beloved Maine\, a slideshow and lecture by Deanna Bonner-Ganter\, focuses on Rockland\, Maine photographer Kosti Ruohomaa’s Maine photographs. Deanna Bonner-Ganter is the perfect guide to explore Ruohomaa’s work and legacy. She spent more than 30 years researching his life and work. In 2016\, her definitive biography\, Kosti Ruohomaa Photographer Poet was published by Downeast Books. She recently retired from the Maine State Museum in Augusta where she spent her career as a curator.  \nRuohomaa was a storyteller with his camera. He captured the spirit and culture of Maine through its people and landscape like few other photographers have ever done. Ruohomaa’s photographs were featured in various publications including Life Magazine\, Look\, National Geographic\, Ladies Home Journal\, and Down East. In 2018\, a large collection of Ruohomaa’s work was given to Penobscot Marine Museum by his agency\, Black Star of New York. This collection is a remarkable resource. While his published work is fairly well known\, it represents less than 10% of the photographs he made; the rest of his photographs had never been seen by the general public.

SUMMARY:Learning with the Museum: Using objects to spark discussions and make history tangible
DESCRIPTION:May 13th at 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, register here. \nJoin PMM Education Director Jeana Ganskop and Museum Educator/Lead Interpreter Sarah Cole as we discuss and share methods for using artifacts and primary sources to bring history to life. This program is great for teachers and parents\, grandparents\, and other members of the public interested in creating meaning between the history we learn in school and family heirlooms or objects we see in museums. Jeana will start by sharing a portion of PMM’s high school/college “Power & Protest” remote program where participants examine a variety of museum objects and discuss how these objects could represent power\, protest\, or both. Then Sarah will lead participants in thoughtfully considering 3 different artifacts and primary sources followed by brainstorming and practicing ways to use these objects to talk about historical topics. After this program\, participants will feel more comfortable using objects to talk about history\, whether it’s in the classroom\, at a museum\, or at home. Click here to register.

HERSEY had a colorful history\, most notably losing three Searsport captains in less than three years. SUMMARY:Fishermen’s Mittens Zoom Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Part I on Thursday\, February 18th and Part II on Thursday\, March 4th \nSessions start at 6pm\n$40/participant\, including shipping. Register here.\nRegister by February 10th to ensure your materials arrive with time to start knitting before the workshop\nFor intermediate to experienced knitters \nBefore rubber gloves\, a fisherman’s wife or mother or an enterprising home economist knit mittens\, experimenting with the design to produce a warm\, durable mitten. Fannie Johnson\, who made three pairs of mittens in the PMM collection\, followed a double-knit\, shrunk-down type pattern from the late 1930s. This set of two workshops is part history\, part DIY.  \nIncluded with the workshop fee\, participants will receive by mail 2 skeins of Bartlett 2-ply fisherman yarn and 4 number four double-pointed needles. Participants should start their mitten project before the first workshop. The pattern is available here. During part one of the Zoom workshop on February 18th\, PMM curator Cipperly Good will first share the history of fishermen’s mittens in Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. Then she will continue with describing her experience knitting fishermen’s mittens and some tips to get around the tough parts.  \nOn March 4th\, in part two of the workshop\, Cipperly will discuss fulling and felting and share the process she went through to complete her fishermen’s mittens. She was part of the first wave of “back-to-the-landers\,” young ideologues wanting simple\, rural lives. The people she came to know and appreciate— locals with long roots and transplants like herself— were frequent subjects of her photography\, both as a journalist for the upstart Waldo Independent and as a resident of Montville growing roots of her own. DESCRIPTION:Paul DeOrsay \nThursday\, February 4\n6pm\nFree\, Registration Required \nThe Camden Conference\, Penobscot Marine Museum\, and the Belfast Free Library will present Paul DeOrsay on Thursday\, February 4th for a program on Arctic exploration\, science\, and the Inuit. This event will be open to all on Zoom.  \nThe 19th century saw a prolific bloom of interest in the Arctic among European and North American nations. Some 50 major expeditions were mounted between 1815 and 1909\, most in search of a Northwest Passage. Along the way\, these expeditions gathered data on geology\, oceanography\, flora and fauna\, magnetism\, gravity and astronomy. Later\, as it was learned that the passage existed but was essentially impassable\, exploration focused on discovering just what lay farther north: an open sea\, another continent\, or just more ice? Finally\, the focus became reaching the North Pole\, a somewhat intangible goal\, but one that generated public enthusiasm and national pride.\n \nThe Inuit are an indigenous people who populate the fringes of the Arctic Ocean from Alaska to Greenland. Over the course of a few centuries\, starting around 1100 CE\, they had displaced the earlier Dorset Culture as they migrated from west to east. Living a semi-nomadic existence in relatively small bands\, they had managed to subsist in the most hostile environment on earth.  In this presentation we will survey the century of Arctic exploration as it brought two drastically different cultures together in the harshest of circumstances. \nRegistration required. Register here.  \nThis event is presented in anticipation of the 34th Annual Camden Conference—The Geopolitics of the Arctic: A Region in Peril\, filmed live at the Camden Opera House and around the world\, and presented via Livestream on February 20-21\, 2021.  Visit www.camdenconference.org for further information. \nBio: Paul DeOrsay’s working life has been ocean-focused.  The first 20 years were spent sailing old or traditional vessels\, first in Penobscot Bay\, and ultimately as master of a sailing research / school ship ranging the western North Atlantic and Caribbean. For the next 20 years he worked in the administration of maritime museums and historic ships\, starting in Galveston\, Texas\, then moving to Philadelphia\, and finally as Director of the Whaling Museum in Cold Spring Harbor\, NY.  From 2012-17\, he served as Director of Friends of the Bay\, a small environmental advocacy organization in Oyster Bay\, NY. \nSince retiring back to Maine\, Paul has been volunteering with maritime history and marine environmental organizations (when not sailing\, either on the bay or frozen lakes.) \nHis interest in Arctic exploration was sparked by a brief account of an 1860 schooner expedition from Thomaston\, Maine\, to Greenland\, chartered by a Bowdoin College professor and manned by students.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 28\n6pm\nFree\, registration required \nThe Camden Conference\, Penobscot Marine Museum\, and the Belfast Free Library will present Charles Lagerbom on Thursday\, January 28th for a program on whaling in Maine. This event will be open to all on Zoom.  \nThe history of American whaling is most frequently associated with Nantucket\, New Bedford and Mystic. However\, the state of Maine also played an integral part in the development and success of this important industry. The sons of Maine became whaling captains\, whaling crews\, inventors\, investors and businessmen. Towns along the coast created community-wide whaling and sealing ventures\, outfitted their own ships and crewed them with their own people. The state also supplied the growing industry with Maine-built ships\, whale boats\, oars and other maritime supplies. Bath built quite a few steam-bark whalers at the end of the 19th century that saw a lot of whaling in the Arctic Ocean beyond Point Barrow. For more than two hundred years\, the state forged a strong and lasting connection with the American whaling industry. Author and historian Charles Lagerbom reveals Maine-built whaling and sealing vessels with Arctic connections and why Maine should rightly take its place alongside its more well-known New England whaling neighbors. He worked in Antarctica with glacial geology research teams from University of Maine Quaternary Institute\, now Climate Change Institute. Charles has frequently written\, lectured and made presentations on cruise ships\, sailing vessels and ashore about history\, life\, politics and science of Antarctica\, Cape Horn and South Atlantic as well as New England maritime history and archaeology. He is author of The Fifth Man: The Life of H.R. Bowers (Caedmon Publishing) and Whaling in Maine (Arcadia Publishing). Charles is a Life member of American Polar Society and past President of the Antarctican Society\, where he serves as current archivist. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 17\n6-8pm\n$20\nRegistration Deadline: December 16 by noon \nBack by popular demand\, in this workshop\, you will learn the monkey’s fist and a basic Turk’s Head Knot. These make great gifts and also perfect holiday ornaments! Participants can work on the projects throughout the week or wait and join us on Zoom on December 17th. With Curator Cipperly Good\, learn about the amazing insulating qualities of fisherman’s mittens\, which get better the wetter they get! (Click here for a preview) Next\, through a group of large format glass plates made in the early 20th century\, PMM Digital Collections Curator Matt Wheeler will explore the wintry world of commercial logging in Maine at a time when all the hard work was done by people and horses. Special guest Executive Director Karen Smith will share examples of quilts from the PMM collection that capture the relationships and stories of their coastal communities. Finally\, Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson will end the program sharing five of his favorite holiday photos from the archives. \nNot a member?
