DESCRIPTION:Paul DeOrsay \nThursday\, February 4\n6pm\nFree\, Registration Required \nThe Camden Conference\, Penobscot Marine Museum\, and the Belfast Free Library will present Paul DeOrsay on Thursday\, February 4th for a program on Arctic exploration\, science\, and the Inuit. This event will be open to all on Zoom.  \nThe 19th century saw a prolific bloom of interest in the Arctic among European and North American nations. Some 50 major expeditions were mounted between 1815 and 1909\, most in search of a Northwest Passage. Along the way\, these expeditions gathered data on geology\, oceanography\, flora and fauna\, magnetism\, gravity and astronomy. Later\, as it was learned that the passage existed but was essentially impassable\, exploration focused on discovering just what lay farther north: an open sea\, another continent\, or just more ice? Finally\, the focus became reaching the North Pole\, a somewhat intangible goal\, but one that generated public enthusiasm and national pride.\n \nThe Inuit are an indigenous people who populate the fringes of the Arctic Ocean from Alaska to Greenland. Over the course of a few centuries\, starting around 1100 CE\, they had displaced the earlier Dorset Culture as they migrated from west to east. Living a semi-nomadic existence in relatively small bands\, they had managed to subsist in the most hostile environment on earth.  In this presentation we will survey the century of Arctic exploration as it brought two drastically different cultures together in the harshest of circumstances. \nRegistration required. Register here.  \nThis event is presented in anticipation of the 34th Annual Camden Conference—The Geopolitics of the Arctic: A Region in Peril\, filmed live at the Camden Opera House and around the world\, and presented via Livestream on February 20-21\, 2021.  Visit www.camdenconference.org for further information. \nBio: Paul DeOrsay’s working life has been ocean-focused.  The first 20 years were spent sailing old or traditional vessels\, first in Penobscot Bay\, and ultimately as master of a sailing research / school ship ranging the western North Atlantic and Caribbean. For the next 20 years he worked in the administration of maritime museums and historic ships\, starting in Galveston\, Texas\, then moving to Philadelphia\, and finally as Director of the Whaling Museum in Cold Spring Harbor\, NY.  From 2012-17\, he served as Director of Friends of the Bay\, a small environmental advocacy organization in Oyster Bay\, NY. \nSince retiring back to Maine\, Paul has been volunteering with maritime history and marine environmental organizations (when not sailing\, either on the bay or frozen lakes.) \nHis interest in Arctic exploration was sparked by a brief account of an 1860 schooner expedition from Thomaston\, Maine\, to Greenland\, chartered by a Bowdoin College professor and manned by students.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, January 28\n6pm\nFree\, registration required \nThe Camden Conference\, Penobscot Marine Museum\, and the Belfast Free Library will present Charles Lagerbom on Thursday\, January 28th for a program on whaling in Maine. This event will be open to all on Zoom.  \nThe history of American whaling is most frequently associated with Nantucket\, New Bedford and Mystic. However\, the state of Maine also played an integral part in the development and success of this important industry. The sons of Maine became whaling captains\, whaling crews\, inventors\, investors and businessmen. Towns along the coast created community-wide whaling and sealing ventures\, outfitted their own ships and crewed them with their own people. The state also supplied the growing industry with Maine-built ships\, whale boats\, oars and other maritime supplies. Bath built quite a few steam-bark whalers at the end of the 19th century that saw a lot of whaling in the Arctic Ocean beyond Point Barrow. For more than two hundred years\, the state forged a strong and lasting connection with the American whaling industry. Author and historian Charles Lagerbom reveals Maine-built whaling and sealing vessels with Arctic connections and why Maine should rightly take its place alongside its more well-known New England whaling neighbors. Lagerbom received his BA in History from Kansas State University and MA in History and Archaeology from University of Maine with work on an American Revolutionary War Truckhouse excavated on Penobscot River. An avid scuba diver\, Charles organized underwater surveys of ship remains in Maine lakes as well as the 1779 Penobscot Expedition. He worked in Antarctica with glacial geology research teams from University of Maine Quaternary Institute\, now Climate Change Institute. Charles has frequently written\, lectured and made presentations on cruise ships\, sailing vessels and ashore about history\, life\, politics and science of Antarctica\, Cape Horn and South Atlantic as well as New England maritime history and archaeology. He is author of The Fifth Man: The Life of H.R. Bowers (Caedmon Publishing) and Whaling in Maine (Arcadia Publishing). Charles is a Life member of American Polar Society and past President of the Antarctican Society\, where he serves as current archivist. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, December 10\n6-8pm\n$30/$50\nRegistration Deadline: December 9 at noon \nSailors’ Valentines are a form of sea shell art\, popular in the 1800s\, when sailors brought them home to their wives\, girlfriends\, mothers\, or sisters. Most Sailors’ Valentines were made in the West Indies\, on the island of Barbados\, between 1830 and 1880\, but production continued into the early 20th century. In this workshop\, you can make your own Sailors’ Valentine to take home. Participants can work on the projects throughout the week or wait and join us on Zoom on the 6th. In this workshop\, you will learn the monkey’s fist and a basic Turk’s Head Knot. These make great gifts and also perfect holiday ornaments! What distinguishes an image? Knowing the story behind an image can deepen one’s appreciation of it. In 2015 we created the 20 Best exhibit to share what our staff felt were the best photos from our collections. SUMMARY:October Speaker Series Zoom: Quintessential Maine Boats with Curator Cipperly Good
DESCRIPTION:October 15\n6pm\nFree\, registration required \nCipperly Good\, PMM Curator\, will present a look at three quintessential Maine boats: the Wabanaki birchbark canoe\, Matinicus double-ender\, and Jonesporter lobsterboat. Each of these boats are designed for fishing in Maine’s coastal waters. The ocean-going birchbark canoes had higher bows and sterns for navigating the ocean waves\, and a round belly to act as a stable platform for spearing fish. The Matinicus double-ender\, a full-bellied rowing boat\, which cut through the waves and provided a stable platform for lobstermen\, found its genesis in the Wabanaki birchbark canoe. The Jonesporter lobsterboat had its origins in a double-ender adapted into a pumpkinseed shape to accommodate an engine.  Come learn more how Maine geography influenced the design of these unique boats.
