SUMMARY:Richard Ames - Risky Business: A Maine Village Goes Global
DESCRIPTION:Richard Ames \nJuly 30\n6pm\nFree \nRichard M. Ames\, guest curator and author\, will give a talk on his research into ships built at Castine and their voyages that highlight the people and the risks involved in Castine’s 19th century global trade. As a youngster\, Ames spent summers in Castine at the Whitney House\, built in 1810 by his direct ancestors\, Captain Henry and Lucy Perkins Whitney. During these visits he became fascinated by his family’s deep ties to the period of maritime trade which brought Castine considerable prosperity. For the last decade\, Ames has researched Castine shipbuilding and international trade. His work provided the foundation for the Historical Society’s 2019 exhibit\, Risky Business: Square-Rigged Ships and Salted Fish. Ames wrote a companion book\, Risky Business: A Maine Village Goes Global\, to accompany the exhibit. The book is available for sale online at castinehistoricalsociety.org. \nRichard and his wife\, Laura\, have three grown children and spend their time between Kiawah Island\, S. C. and Highlands\, N. C. and visit Castine in the summer. Richard has previously written articles on family history published in the Historical Society’s newsletter\, The Castine Visitor. The Deborah Pulliam Memorial Lectures began in 2008 to honor the memory and achievements of Deborah Pulliam. Ms. Pulliam\, who died in 2007\, generously supported organizations in Castine and beyond. She was an active member of the Castine Historical Society and served as the editor of The Castine Visitor for six years. \nRegister here. \nHelp support programs like this by becoming a member or making a donation. \nThis programming has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor. SUMMARY:Jim Nelson - Pirates on the Maine Coast
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 9\n6pm\nFREE \nMaine is known for a lot of things\, both good and bad\, but piracy is not necessarily one of them\, not when the Caribbean featured such temptations as gold and rum. But that does not mean that Maine did not see its share of piracy. Award-winning author\, and occasional pirate\, James L. Nelson will present a talk on Piracy on the Coast of Maine\, a look at our very own buccaneers Down East. \nJim Nelson was born and raised in Maine and graduated from UCLA’s film school. Finding that despite being in Southern California\, it was a damp\, drizzly November in his soul\, Jim took the cure Melville recommended and decided to sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. For six years he worked on board traditional sailing ships before launching a writing career as in 1994. He has since written more than twenty-five works of maritime fiction and history. He is the winner or the American Library Association/William Young Boyd Award and the Naval Order’s Samuel Eliot Morison Award. Nelson has lectured all over the country and appeared on the Discovery Channel\, History Channel\, National Geographic and BookTV. He currently lives in Harpswell\, Maine\, with his former shipmate\, now wife\, Lisa and two of their four children. \nRegister here. \nHelp support programs like this by becoming a member or making a donation. \nThis programming has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor.
