SUMMARY:Rescheduled: Chanteys from the Colcord Collection
DESCRIPTION:Joanna Colcord’s seminal collection Roll and Go: Songs of American Sailormen was deeply influenced by her seafaring life. She was born in the South Pacific to a captain from Searsport\, Maine and attended high school by correspondence in Hong Kong before earning a degree in social work. This presentation explores Colcord’s remarkable global childhood and its influence on her as a noted author of sea music collections still widely consulted today. We will explore domestic life at sea on American sailing ships through Joanna’s eyes\, travel the world with her in maps and globe animations\, and place her in context of other maritime music collectors from J.B. Whall and L.A. Smith to William Doerflinger and Stan Hugill. And naturally\, we will sing some of her chanteys together! \nLynn Noel is a regionally and internationally respected chantey singer with a powerful voice\, a huge repertoire\, and a gift for audience participation. Her Sea Music Singarounds have packed halls to capacity at festivals from New England to Sidmouth (UK). Lynn’s sea music braids together working chanteys from the age of sail; flowing ballads of love\, loss\, and life at sea; environmental education in marine ecology; and a rich knowledge of maritime history with a focus on seafaring women. \nLynn is a professional heritage interpreter and independent scholar in geography\, history\, and folklore. A former research fellow of the Institute of Arctic Studies at Dartmouth College\, Lynn founded Digital Heritage Consulting to bring traditional song and heritage arts online to create digital community\, with projects like the Mermaid’s Tavern online folk club and DIY Digital life coaching for artists and nonprofits seeking to adopt digital tools. Lynn’s undergraduate and graduate work in geography and women’s studies prepared her well to explore and appreciate the personal and professional life of Joanna Colcord as a social scientist and world traveler. Lynn owns a well-loved 1924 first edition of Roll and Go: Songs of American Sailormen. \nOn Zoom or in person at PMM’s Old Vestry building\, 2 Church St. \nFree to attend. Suggested admission $5. Register here. \nThis program has been generously supported by the Yardarm Motel.

SUMMARY:Joanna Colcord’s Searsport
DESCRIPTION:Searsport Maine was quite a happening place at the turn of the 20th Century. The town was prosperous with numerous shipyards and the related industries that supported them. Joanna Colcord\, arguably Searsport’s most notable woman\, spent her formative years there. The daughter of famed sea captain Lincoln Colcord\, Joanna grew up in this coastal village. What was life like in Searsport then? While many of the same buildings and homes still remain\, things looked very different. PMM Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson will take a look back in time at the Searsport Joanna lived in\, drawing from the museum’s numerous photography collections. Register here. \nOn Zoom or in person at PMM’s Old Vestry building\, 2 Church St. \nFree\, Suggested admission $5 \nImage: Joanna Colcord sitting on “Pulpit Rock” at low tide along the shore of the Penobscot Bay in Searsport\, Maine. SUMMARY:Looking for Joanna Colcord in the Penobscot Marine Museum Archives
DESCRIPTION:Maybe you have read Joanna Colcord’s Roll and Go: Songs of American Sailormen (celebrating 100 years since it was first published in 1924!). Or perhaps you’re familiar with Joanna’s publications and professional career in social work. Maybe you’re wondering if she’s the sister of author and historian Lincoln Colcord. Or it’s possible you’ve never heard of her at all! Although she was born at sea in 1882\, Joanna had deep roots in Searsport and a life dedicated to her profession\, her interest in maritime history and culture\, and her family. The Penobscot Marine Museum archive has a wealth of documents written by or relating to Joanna Colcord. In this talk\, Penobscot Marine Museum Education Director Jeana Ganskop will share documents that help to fill in the gaps between Joanna’s public image and the person behind it. Hear an essay she wrote in college\, see her process of collecting chanteys\, and peek into her later life after her retirement. Register here. \nOn Zoom or in person at PMM’s Old Vestry building\, 2 Church St. \nFree\, Suggested admission $5
