SUMMARY:Paul Molyneaux: A Doryman’s Reflection
DESCRIPTION:Maine Sardine Council Collection\, LB1998.12.973 \nThursday\, September 7\, 7pm\nVisitors Center\, 2 Church St.\nCost: Free \nWhat happens when the oceans are emptied of all their fish? What happens when three hundred years of human knowledge and expertise disappear before the onslaught of the technology-driven world? Author and fisherman Paul Molyneaux will answer these questions during our speaker’s series on September 7 at 7pm in the Museum Admissions Center at 2 Church Street. \nMolyneaux wrote The Doryman’s Reflection\, an account of what transpired in the New England fisheries over the past half century\, as told by the people who lived it\, including Molyneaux himself. Fishermen survive as relics\, the last hunter-gatherers among us. Their boats\, crammed with ropes and nets\, carry the mystique of a nearly forgotten world ruled by the elements. Molyneaux as a young man journeyed to Maine with no experience and a dream of working on a boat. This is the story of his apprenticeship with Bernard Raynes\, one of Maine’s last independent commercial fishermen. Originally published in 2005\, the book has been thoroughly updated to cover the events of the past ten years. \nFor more information\, please call 207-548-2529.

SUMMARY:Brooksville\, Maine: The Postcard View
DESCRIPTION:Post Card Store in St. Stephen\, N.B. from Penobscot Marine Museum. \n“Brooksville\, Maine: The Postcard View”\nWednesday\, April 26 at 5:30 p.m.\nBrooksville Public Library\n1 Town House Rd\, Brooksville\, ME 04617\nFree \nPhoto Archivist\, Kevin Johnson\, will present Brooksville Maine: The Postcard View; Selections from the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company” at the Brooksville Free Public Library. The slide show and talk will consist of a short film about the postcard company as well as the historical views of Brooksville and surrounding towns.  \nThe Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company was founded in 1909 in Belfast\, Maine by Rudolph Herman Cassens. Cassens’ goal was to photograph small towns and rural areas from Maine to California\, producing “real photo” postcards that would be valued for promoting tourism. Cassens did not fulfill his dream of photographing the entire country\, but his company did produce over 50\,000 glass plate negatives of New England and Upstate New York between 1909 and 1947. The collection is full of historic businesses\, family homes and local landmarks. \nThe images are fascinating on many levels. They take viewers back in time to when the roads were still dirt\, horse drawn carriages outnumbered cars\, coastlines were undeveloped\, and elms lined the streets. The collection is now part of the archives of the Penobscot Marine Museum and continues to grow as more negatives that “escaped” from the collection are located and acquired. The collection is being digitized and more than 90\,0000 thousand images can now be viewed on the museum’s website in their online database. \nFor more information\, please contact Brook Ewing Minner at Brooksville Free Public Library\, 207-326-4560 or brook@brooksvillelibrary.org.

SUMMARY:The Net Result: Our Evolving Fisheries
DESCRIPTION:The Net Result: Our Evolving Fisheries \nHistory Conference\nSaturday\, April 8\, 2017\n8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.\nUniversity of Maine Hutchinson Center\n80 Belmont Avenue\, Belfast\, Maine \nStudent: $30\nMuseum Members: $50\nTeacher/Non-Profit Employee: $50\nNon-members: $60 \nThis year’s History Conference delves into statement: Human innovation and technology have proven to be too successful for the health of our fisheries and our local ecosystem.  Our line-up of scientists\, historians\, journalists\, activists\, consumers and fishermen will answer the question: \nHow did this happen and what do we do now?\nThe History of Overfishing: the Price of Efficiency\nJeffrey Bolster\, University of New Hampshire Professor of History\nJeffrey Bolster brings historical context to the present issues facing the fishing industry.  As author of The Mortal Sea: Fishing the Atlantic in the Age of Sail\, he shows that while the eradication of fish has gone on for centuries\, the impact of fishing in the 20th century has been devastating.  \nTaking Stock: the Story Data Tells About Our Fisheries\nTed Ames\, Fisheries Ecologist & Co-founder of Penobscot East Resource Center\nUsing catch data from historic fishing logs and other sources\, marine ecologists have tracked the decline in fishing stocks as the use of more efficient fishing technology rose.  Ted Ames\, a fisherman and historical fisheries ecology researcher\, whose work in marine conservation earned him a MacArthur Fellowship\, looks at the past and present scientific data on the groundfish stock and predicts future trends if conservation measures are adopted or ignored. \nThe Search for Consensus: Sustaining the Fisheries\nPeter Neill\, Director of World Ocean Observatory\nPeter Neill has been advocating for the health and sustainability of our oceans through numerous means of communication. He will discuss the evolution of the scientist-fishery harvester conversation and initiatives by each to address sustainability issues and meet conservation objectives imposed by regulatory bodies. \nGroundfish Policy in Maine: a Retrospective\nPatrick Shepard\, Fisheries Policy Associate at Penobscot East Resource Center\nFisheries policy and conservation have not always been synonymous in our history. Patrick Shepard walks us through the major turning points in the groundfish regulations and brings us the current crossroad in policy as we plot the future of this historically important fishery. \nGastronomy and the Sea: Our Changing Tastes\nNancy Harmon Jenkins\, Food Historian and Writer\nThe seafood\, we as humans consume\, has evolved over time based on the availability of the resource locally and through Trans-Oceanic trading webs\, as well as the latest culinary trends. Food historian Nancy Harmon Jenkins charts the rise and fall of salt fish\, sardine on crackers and other seafood favorites from the past\, discusses current seafood consumption and predicts future seafood culinary trends. \nTurning the Tide on Decline: The Fisherman’s Perspective\nGlen Libby\, Manager of Port Clyde Fresh Catch and co-author of Caught: time\, place\, fish. \nAs a fisherman\, Mr. Libby has seen how the technological revolution has impacted how and where fishermen fish over a period of several decades. Not all of these advances were good from a sustainable fisheries perspective but we are now learning how to use technology to enhance the recovery of our groundfish fishery here in Maine. \nDocumenting the Evolution: National Fisherman\nDave Jackson\, former publisher of National Fisherman\nNational Fisherman has been the periodical of record for the fishing industry for over 65 years\, providing context for today’s hot button issues in the industry. Former publisher Dave Jackson\, using photographs from the periodical’s pages\, will explore how National Fisherman documented the technological evolution in the fisheries and the resulting ecological and social effects. \nFor more information or to register by phone\, please call 207-548-2529. \nRegister Online

SUMMARY:A Rural Life for ME: Stories from Maine Elders
DESCRIPTION:A Rural Life for ME: Stories from Maine Elders\nwith Meghan Vigeant \nWednesday\, March 29\, 2017 at 6:30 p.m.\nPMM’s Stephen Phillips Memorial Library\n9 Church Street \nAuthor and personal historian Meghan Vigeant shares stories and plays audio recordings about Maine’s hardscrabble rural life gathered from the elders\, larger-than-life characters\, and tricksters she has worked with over the years. Stories range from building a cabin in the back woods for only $97 to how to mend a broken leg on a remote island. Touching\, funny\, and well told – this presentation is sure to entertain as well as inform anyone who wants to save someone’s story.\n \nMeghan Vigeant \nBio: Meghan Vigeant was born to a fisherman\, so she grew up hearing all kinds of tale tales. The experience of sitting at the feet of a storyteller must have stuck\, because she made her profession. For the last ten years Meghan Vigeant has been interviewing people and helping them tell their stories. Four years ago she decided to make a business out of it called Stories To Tell. She helps people\, families\, and organizations to turn their real life stories and history into books and audio memoirs.

SUMMARY:Maine on Glass: The Early Twentieth Century in Glass Plate Photography An Illustrated Talk
DESCRIPTION:Authors (left to right) Kevin Johnson\, Earle G. Shettleworth\, Jr.\, and Bill Bunting \nFascinating historic photographs taken from 1909 to 1950 of a Maine which has almost completely disappeared are the subject of the new book Maine on Glass: The Early Twentieth Century in Glass Plate Photography by Maine State Historian Earle G. Shettleworth\, Jr.\, Penobscot Marine Museum Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson\, and historian Bill Bunting. The photographs were originally taken to be made into postcards during the postcard craze of the early 1900s when billions of postcards were mailed world-wide. The photographs show Mainers at work and at play everywhere from lobster shacks and wilderness hunting camps\, to steam and sailing ships and grand hotels. On Sunday\, January 29th at 2:00 pm\, Boothbay Railway Village presents an illustrated talk about Maine on Glass: The Early Twentieth Century in Glass Plate Photography with authors Earle G. Shettleworth\, Jr.\, Kevin Johnson\, and Bill Bunting. The talk will take place inside the Museum’s 1847 Boothbay Town Hall. Admission is free\, suggested donation of $5 appreciated. \nThe photographs in Maine on Glass: The Early Twentieth Century in Glass Plate Photography were taken by the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company\, a Belfast\, Maine company operated by R. Herman Cassens from 1909 to 1947. The company produced real-photo postcards\, so-called because the cards were printed in darkrooms rather than on litho presses. Cassens wanted to photograph rural towns and villages from Maine to California. He did not achieve this dream but his company did produce more than 40\,000 glass plate negatives. The Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company collection is now housed at Penobscot Marine Museum.
