DESCRIPTION:Edith Gawler and Bennett Konesni\, who play banjo and fiddle and sing old-time music from Maine and beyond\, will be playing at Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport\, Maine for a Members Reception in Main Street Gallery on Friday\, May 20\, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Edith grew up in Belgrade\, Maine as a member of the legendary Gawler Family Band. Together Edith & Bennett have played Maine music across the U.S. and around the world. This event is free to Penobscot Marine Museum members. Museum membership is available online or by calling 207-548-0334 or 2529. \n“It was one of the best nights of music the Parrish [Art Museum] has ever experienced\, and the dynamism\, charm\, and talent of Edith and Bennett have made an everlasting imprint\,” says Amy Kirwin of the Parrish Art Museum. In addition to their music\, Edith and Bennett own and operate Duckback Farm in Belfast\, Maine\, which focuses on growing garlic and culinary herbs for table and seed. \nPenobscot Marine Museum opens for the season on Saturday\, May 28th. New this year\, residents of Waldo County will receive free admission\, each town during a specific week. Each town’s free week is listed here. Residents of Lincolnville and Islesboro will kick off the program with free admission to Penobscot Marine Museum from Sunday\, May 29 through Saturday\, June 4.

The museum’s theme Wish You Were here: Communicating Maine includes several exhibits; Historic Maine: A Postcard View\, Acadia National Park: A Postcard View\, and Maine: A Continuum of Place. Carl Little\, author of Paintings of Maine\, Art of the Maine Islands and Guest Curator of the museum’s exhibit Maine: A Continuum of Place will be attending\, along with many of the artists represented in the exhibit. Photography Archivist Kevin Johnson will also be on hand to discuss the museum’s extensive historic photography and postcard collection featured in these exhibits. \nEach business attending will receive a gift of five free passes to Penobscot Marine Museum. “We wanted to say thank you to all of our local businesses\,” says Liz Lodge\, the museum’s Executive Director. “These local businesses do so much for the community and for us\, they help make this area vibrant.” Four of the twelve museum buildings will be open in this special preview: the ship captain’s house\, Main Street Gallery\, Visitors Center\, and Merithew. The museum opens to the public on Saturday\, May 28.

SUMMARY:The Famous Mariners of Deer Isle Discussed at Penobscot Marine Museum
DESCRIPTION:The men of Deer Isle have been famous for their maritime skills for well over a hundred years.  In 1895 and 1899 the America’s Cup was won by all-Deer Isle crews\, the first and last time in history a single town supplied an entire crew for the race.  At Penobscot Marine Museum onThursday\, October 8 at 7:00 pm\, anthropologist William Haviland will discuss why the men of Deer Isle developed such an excellent reputation and were sought after as crewmen especially for the big steam yachts of the early 20th century.  Haviland’s book on the subject\,Floating Palaces: America’s Queens of the Sea which he wrote with Deer Isle native Barbara (Greenlaw) Britton\, was published this year.  Admission is free. \nFloating Palaces: America’s Queens of the Sea by William Haviland and Barbara (Greenlaw) Britton \nWilliam Haviland is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Vermont. Growing up he spent summers on Deer Isle and is now a full-time resident.  He is on the boards of the Deer Isle-Stonington Historical Society and the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor. \nFloating Palaces: America’s Queens of the Sea is part of Penobscot Marine Museum’s Boat Talk Series.  The talk will take place on Thursday\, October 8\, 7:00 pm\, at Douglas and Margaret Carver Memorial Art Gallery\, 11 Church Street\, Searsport\, Maine.  Admission is free.

SUMMARY:Searsport High School Students Discuss Moving Stories of Maine Veterans
DESCRIPTION:Uniforms from Memoirs of War: A Soldier’s Seabag at Penobscot Maine Museum. \nThis winter five Searsport District High School seniors\, Connor Fraser\, Dylon Grant\, Kevin Keniston\, Anthony Powers\, and Bartley Santos\, curated an exhibit\, Memoirs of War: A Soldier’s Seabag\, which opened this spring at the Penobscot Maine Museum. Working with PMM assistant curator Cipperly Good and SDHS teacher Kathleen Jenkins\, the students chose objects from Penobscot Marine Museum’s collection\, researched the objects\, researched the wars\, and interviewed Maine veterans about their war experiences.  Using objects the veterans took with them to war and objects they brought back home\, this exhibit tells the story of ten Maine veterans’ wartime experiences from WW II to the present.   On Wednesday\, June 17\, 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm\, the students\, two of whom are joining the Army National Guard this summer\, will share with the public the moving stories they discovered while curating the exhibit. DESCRIPTION:Salted Tales: Stories From the Sea Told Live at Colonial Theater on March 29 \nCoastal Maine’s rich maritime heritage has produced a lot of sailors and you don’t work on the water without accumulating good stories.  Penobscot Marine Museum and Colonial Theater invite you to Salted Tales: Stories From the Sea Told Live at Colonial Theater on Sunday\, March 29\, 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm.  Hear working seamen and women tell hair-raising real-life sea stories of amazing experiences on the water from fending off Somali pirates to putting out aircraft carrier fires.  Each fast-paced story will be eight minutes long.  Story tellers’ backgrounds range from the U.S. Navy to tug boat captain to commercial fisherman. \nSalted Tales: Stories From the Sea Told Live is a joint presentation of the Colonial Theater and Penobscot Marine Museum.  Refreshments will be available at intermission. Admission is $5\, Penobscot Marine Museum members are free.
