SUMMARY:Speaker: Cannery Town Listening Sessions with Cipperly Good
DESCRIPTION:While the Maine sardine industry was well documented with oral histories during its heyday in the 20th century\, not much has been recorded now that the industry is no more. SUMMARY:Speaker: Show & Tell from the PMM Archives with Paige Lilly
DESCRIPTION:The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation funded a recent project to expand cataloging of 600 log books\, ledgers\, and customs records in the PMM collections. Join us to learn how the work was done and see examples of historical treasures uncovered.  Focusing on instances of emotion found in otherwise routine record books\, the talk highlights the dangers local seagoing families faced at sea during the U.S. Civil War and the risks of commercial shipping under sail even in peacetime. Humor\, empathy\, respect\, and longing reveal the character and circumstances of the writers. Register here to receive a reminder email. \nPaige Lilly held several positions in Maine’s archives and museums\, ranging from the Shaker Library in New Gloucester to the William S. Cohen Papers at the University of Maine in Orono and most recently at the Castine Historical Society. In the 1990s\, she was the librarian/archivist here at PMM.  Paige now offers collections consulting and exhibition planning services from her home office in Blue Hill. \nFree\, Suggested admission $5 \nCaption: From the Journal of schooner C. SUMMARY:Speaker: "Packed Like a Can of Sardines" with Kevin Johnson
DESCRIPTION:The sardine industry supported Maine coastal communities for well over a century. The workforce in canneries included thousands of women\, even more than the number of men fishing for herring. This industry was a part of the economic\, cultural\, and social fabric of families and communities all along our state’s coast. Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson will cast a net into PMM’s photo archives and share many fishy photos and the stories behind them in his presentation. SUMMARY:Speaker: Sardine Carriers with Jon Johansen
DESCRIPTION:For years the sardine industry was a major enterprise and what many remember were the sardine carriers plying the coast bringing the catch to market. The early boats evolved into the impressive carriers of the late 1940s. Penobscot Marine Museum board president Jon Johansen will discuss the design changes. SUMMARY:Member Monday — We Didn’t Start the Fire
DESCRIPTION:In this Member Monday program\, education director Jeana Ganskop will explore the history of Maine’s fascinating lime industry. People took rock out of the ground\, burned it into something new\, loaded that something new into barrels onboard wooden schooners\, and sailed them to places like New York City where the lime was used in construction. Most of the lime arrived at its destination\, but sometimes the cargo caught fire! We will look at photos and objects from PMM’s collections and we will discuss how the science and history of Maine’s lime industry is highlighted in PMM school programs. \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. These programs are scheduled January through April with one presentation from each of the following departments: Administration\, Curatorial\, Photo Archives\, and Education. \nFree for members. Not a member? Join here. \n\nPhoto: Schooner ONWARD with cargo of lime burning in Rockport Harbor\, 1905. (Ed Coffin Collection\, LB2013.21.192)
