SUMMARY:Member Monday: Big Plans for Big Jim
DESCRIPTION:Join Executive Director Karen Smith for an update on our BIG project to restore the iconic Big Jim. This 40-foot-tall Maine fisherman has stood as a proud symbol for our coastal heritage for more than six decades. As you’ve likely heard\, plans are underway to restore him to his original likeness\, display him in Searsport\, and return him home. Karen will share the details behind this ambitious plan that will boost PMM’s Sardineland exhibit and draw even more attention to the stories of Maine’s sardine industry\, its people\, and its communities. \nMember Mondays are a fun perk of membership—casual lunchtime Zoom programs where you can connect with museum staff and learn more about what we do. Programs run from January through April and feature one presentation from each department: Administration\, Curatorial\, Photo Archives\, and Education. Not a member yet? Join here. \nFree\, Members Only \nCaption: Distant view of Big Jim. Maine Sardine Council Collection\, LB1998.12.303.

SUMMARY:Member Monday: Rehousing and Cataloguing—Bringing Order to the Chaos
DESCRIPTION:While we were excited to receive the Wilbur Yacht Collection of boat plans\, company archives\, and design tools\, and with it\, some gems like the plans to Billy Joel’s 38′ fast cruiser\, it was overwhelming. Luckily\, we have a rolodex full of former high school and college interns to call upon. Belfast-native Willa Bywater\, now a student at Bryn Mawr College with an interest in Museums and Archives\, came to our rescue! Over the past summer\, Willa rehoused the 159 sheafs of boat plans and created a bare bone\, but searchable catalog of those boat plans. Come learn more about the project and see a few gems in this Member Monday! \nMember Mondays are a fun perk of membership—casual lunchtime Zoom programs where you can connect with museum staff and learn more about what we do. SUMMARY:Member Monday: Vinalhaven Summers by Eliot Elisofon
DESCRIPTION:In 2020\, PMM received a collection of photos by world renown Life Magazine photographer\, Eliot Elisofon.  Nearly 2\,000 slides and negatives shot by Elisofon between 1940-1970\, on or around Vinalhaven were donated by his daughter Elin. His 1941 cover photo of General Patten was the first color cover photo used by Life Magazine. In addition\, his work in Africa is housed at the National Museum of African Art. PMM Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson will give an overview of the collection and share some of its highlights. \nMember Mondays are a fun perk of membership—casual lunchtime Zoom programs where you can connect with museum staff and learn more about what we do.
