SUMMARY:Maritime & Maine Topics Author Series—Penny West
DESCRIPTION:Penny West will discuss London Letters Home of an American Apprentice Preparing for the Far East Tea Trade\, Gus Farley\, Jr. (1844-1899). The talk will present a glimpse of the four years Gus spent in London apprenticing as a tea taster\, preparing to join his cousins’ firm of Augustine Heard & Co. in China – 1861-1865. Gus’ letters describe the daily workings of the mid-19th century tea business in London and hint at his coming of age there. The talk will focus on the ships and tea trade aspects of his time in London. \nPenelope Pelham West grew up in Washington\, D.C.\, then went north to college to seek her New England roots. Being named Penelope Pelham\, and the subsequent gift of this woman’s 17th century shoe\, initiated her into the pleasures of researching\, traveling and writing. She lives in Maine. Over the years\, she has worked in schools and libraries\, founded and run the Green Store in Belfast\, and now lives in a cohousing community in a net zero all electric house. \nFree\, Suggested admission $5\, register here \nPhoto: St. Katharine’s Docks\, London 1860

SUMMARY:Member Monday — Digitizing the Chart Collection
DESCRIPTION:Join Cipperly Good for our February Member Monday presentation where we check out the new chart digitization rig. The PMM Collection is full of nautical charts with handwritten notes by navigators about the weather\, events on board\, and the best place to provision. These large charts are difficult to photograph at a high enough resolution to see these notations. Our solution was to build a camera rig that photographs the chart in smaller segments and “stitch” them together with software. We will give you a sneak peek into the process as we get these charts digitized and available on our website. \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. Beginning in 2024\, Member Monday programs are scheduled January through April with one presentation from each of the following departments: Administration\, Curatorial\, Photo Archives\, and Education. Not a member? Join here. \nPhoto: Cipperly Good\, the Richard Saltonstall Jr. Curator of Maritime History\, directs Matt Wheeler\, the Digital Curator\, to move the camera rig to the next position to capture a segment of a nautical chart.
