Penobscot Bay History Online is our dedicated education website. Students, teachers, historians, researchers, and anyone interested in maritime history can use it to learn about maritime history and culture. The site contains eleven narrative chapters on a variety of maritime topics; a searchable collections database; a glossary to help understand maritime terminology; and primary source documents. These include: the journal of a 16-year-old boy who sailed from Belfast to California and back in 1866; the journal of the teenage daughter of a Brewer captain and their trip to France and Cuba in 1880; and the log of a Coolie Master aboard a Rockland ship transporting Chinese workers to Cuba in 1861.
The site provides information aligning each chapter with the most relevant Maine State Learning Results, both 1997 and 2007 versions. It also includes Common Core Standards in English Language Arts and Math for each chapter. Updated resource lists are found at the end of each chapter.
Check back often, as we are continuing to add to the Penobscot Bay History Online site!
