SUMMARY:Gee’s Bend Quilt-Inspired Painting Workshop Offered at Penobscot Marine Museum
DESCRIPTION:Patchwork of Color\, a one-day acrylic painting workshop with artist Susan Tobey White at Penobscot Marine Museum will be held on Friday\, August 15 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Beginning painters as well as those with experience will enjoy this class using the Gee’s Bend Quilts as inspiration to create colorful acrylic paintings.  For a list of materials\, please call Susan White at 207-338-8990 or email stwhite@gwi.net.  The workshop fee is $75 which includes museum admission.   To register for Patchwork of Color please call Penobscot Marine Museum at 207-548-2529 or 548-0334. \nScallions\, acrylic by Susan Tobey White \nSusan Tobey White teaches painting workshops and owns High Street Studio & Gallery in Belfast\, Maine.  She designed the 2004 and 2007 North Atlantic Blues Festival Poster and the 2008-2012 Maine Celtic Festival Poster\, and recently earned the title of Golden Artist Educator by being one of 18  artist/workshop instructors chosen to participate in an intensive week long workshop learning about the acrylic products created by Golden Artist Colors\, a leading manufacturer of acrylic paints.  Her work is in private collections throughout the United States\, in Canada\, Europe and Australia. \n“Do It Your Way”: Gee’s Bend Quilts & Quilters in Maine isat Penobscot Marine Museum from Saturday\, August 2nd through September 7th\, 2014.  This is the first time that Gee’s Bend quilts\, which achieved fame in a series of national exhibits beginning in 1998\, have been north of Boston.  The exhibit is sponsored by Fiber College of Maine and the Emily and William Muir Community Fund of the Maine Community Foundation.

SUMMARY:Traditional Knotted Netting Demonstrated at Penobscot Marine Museum
DESCRIPTION:Knotted netting\, or fishnetting\, is one of the oldest human crafts\, and is still used in Third World countries to make fishing nets\, hammocks and bags.  Many Mainers remember when lobstermen made their own bait bags using knotted netting.  Stephanie Crossman\, whose family lives on Vinalhaven\, learned fishnetting twenty-five years ago from her husband’s great-grandmother\, Gram J\, who was ninety-two at the time.  Crossman was the only family member to take up the craft\, and she inherited the net stand made for Gram J by her uncle\, as well as Gram J’s\, hand-carved needles and mesh boards.  Stephanie Crossman will be demonstrating fishnetting at Penobscot Marine Museum on Thursday\, August 7th from 11:00 to 3:00 pm.  The demonstration is free with museum admission. \nFishnetting bags by Stephanie Crossman \nStephanie Crossman’s fishnetting demonstration is part of Artisan Days: Demonstrations of 19th Century Crafts at Penobscot Marine Museum.  This program runs Thursdays in July and August and on Saturdays in September and October\, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm.  It is a collaboration with Boothbay Railway Village in Boothbay\, Maine and is sponsored by Knickerbocker Group: Designers\, Builders\, Cabinetmakers\, Caretakers. \nPenobscot Marine Museum recreates an historic seacoast village and has fun family activities daily.  Penobscot Marine Museum\, on Route One\, 40 East Main Street\, Searsport\, Maine is open May 24 through October 19\, Monday through Saturday\, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm\, Sunday noon to 5:00 pm.  Admission is free for Searsport residents and museum members. DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, August 6 and Thursday\, August 7\, 8:30 am – 3:30 pm \nThis two-day workshop will explore how to use local resources—documents\, artifacts\, landscapes\, and the rich expertise in every town—to examine historical issues with a national focus.  In Searsport\, Maine.  The workshop is open to teachers\, librarians\, archivists\, members of local historical societies\, and all interested local history enthusiasts. There is a $25 charge to cover lunches on two days; program and material costs have been generously funded by the Richard Saltonstall Charitable Foundation. Educators can earn 15 PDPs and 1 Graduate Credit (for an additional fee) from Framingham State University.
