SUMMARY:Children’s Explorer Camp — Kids on Land and at Sea in the 19th Century
DESCRIPTION:What was life like for the children living in maritime communities in the late 1800s? During this camp\, children will discover daily life long ago along Penobscot Bay and on board ships at sea through games\, crafts\, songs\, and (fun) chores. Before and after care is available. Registration deadline is January 10. Register here. \nAges 5-10\, $50 base rate\, flexible pricing options. \nFlexible Pricing\nWe want local museum programming to be available for anyone and we understand that different people have different financial situations. In light of that\, we have three options for pricing. The base rate covers the cost of this program and the Pay-It-Forward rate helps us be able to provide a reduced rate to keep these programs available to all. Choose the price that works best for your family.

SUMMARY:Fall Open House
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an open house featuring our 2023 photo exhibit\, Sam Murfitt and Maine’s Working Waterfronts and our new permanent exhibit\, Rusticators on the Water. \nPhotographer Sam Murfitt has spent most of his life connected with the water—while making photographs\, building boats\, and working for fishing publications. For decades\, he has photographed fishermen\, their work\, and their boats\, and in that work\, has come to see their way of life as finite and fleeting. His images document that lifestyle and offer a window into Maine’s working waterfronts and boatbuilding traditions. Sam Murfitt and Maine’s Working Waterfronts has been generously sponsored by Hamilton Marine. \nWhen Rusticators flocked to Maine in the late 19th to mid-20th centuries\, they sought a rustic vacation to retreat from their busy city lives. To get on the water\, they commissioned locally-built small wooden boats: rowboats for exploration\, daysailers for picnics\, and racing boats for yacht club competitions. This exhibit showcases the Maine-built boats at the heart of the rusticating culture and explores their enduring impact. Rusticators on the Water has been generously supported by the Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust. \nFree and open to the public \nPhoto: Lobstermen pose with their winning lobster boat racing trophies. Photograph by Sam Murfitt.

SUMMARY:Opening Day Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the opening of a new season! During the event both our Main Street Gallery and our Old Vestry building will be open so you can check out two of our 2023 exhibits\, Working the Sea and In Extremis: Historic Ships in America. \nWorking the Sea features photographs from the museum’s National Fisherman and Atlantic Fishermen collections inspired by an upcoming photo book by long-time National Fisherman contributor Michael Crowley. This exhibit will run the duration of the 2023 season. Working the Sea has been generously sponsored by Diversified Communications. \nIn Extremis is photographer Pim Van Hemmen’s ongoing project to document America’s historic ships. Upon moving to the United States from the Netherlands\, Van Hemmen noted that relatively little attention is paid to our country’s maritime past and its historic vessels. In response\, he set out to create a visual record of this maritime past. The exhibit takes its name from the In Extremis doctrine\, which allows ship operators to take extreme measures to avoid imminent danger. The exhibit will run through August 5th\, with an illustrated talk by Van Hemmen on June 15th. In Extremis has been generously sponsored by Sprague Energy. \nPhoto: A dipnet full of scup\, or porgies\, rests on the trap boat gunwale as Tony Coccoro repeats the endless task of repairing tears in the weir net. Photograph by Milson Moore\, National Fisherman Collection\, LB2012.15.33.

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, August 10\, 5-8pm click here to see available times\n$25/family (up to 10 people) \nSome lives in Searsport were very well recorded – sea captains kept logs and wrote letters\, their literate wives and children kept diaries.  We talk a lot about these families because we know a lot about them. Join us for this unique walking tour that incorporates fun local history with trivia! Choose to answer questions as you go\, or go for the glory and record your answers to see who in your group gets the most right (clipboards\, paper\, and pencils provided). Trivia questions are taken from pop culture and general American history and relate to the topics being discussed. \nOur talented tour guides will lead you around our beautiful campus\, sharing fascinating stories and also allowing you time to visit several exhibits. Tours are $25/family (up to 10 people). Please pre-register.   \nRain or shine. Participants must contact Penobscot Marine Museum before the start time of their scheduled tour for a refund or to reschedule. Email Jeana at jganskop@pmm-maine.org. No-shows will be charged the full rate.
