SUMMARY:Jr. Adventurers - Signal Flags
DESCRIPTION:July 19th\, 11am-3pm \nHow would you talk to someone far away if you didn’t have a telephone? This Jr. Adventurers programming is all about signal flags. These weekly drop-in programs are designed for children and their families to have fun at the museum. Each will explore a different topic that relates to our exhibits. Families can read together\, do a craft\, play a game\, and go on a scavenger hunt. \nPrice included with museum admission.

SUMMARY:Opening Day Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the opening of a new season! During the event both our Main Street Gallery and our Old Vestry building will be open so you can check out two of our 2023 exhibits\, Working the Sea and In Extremis: Historic Ships in America. \nWorking the Sea features photographs from the museum’s National Fisherman and Atlantic Fishermen collections inspired by an upcoming photo book by long-time National Fisherman contributor Michael Crowley. This exhibit will run the duration of the 2023 season. Working the Sea has been generously sponsored by Diversified Communications. \nIn Extremis is photographer Pim Van Hemmen’s ongoing project to document America’s historic ships. Upon moving to the United States from the Netherlands\, Van Hemmen noted that relatively little attention is paid to our country’s maritime past and its historic vessels. In response\, he set out to create a visual record of this maritime past. The exhibit takes its name from the In Extremis doctrine\, which allows ship operators to take extreme measures to avoid imminent danger. The exhibit will run through August 5th\, with an illustrated talk by Van Hemmen on June 15th. In Extremis has been generously sponsored by Sprague Energy. \nPhoto: A dipnet full of scup\, or porgies\, rests on the trap boat gunwale as Tony Coccoro repeats the endless task of repairing tears in the weir net. Photograph by Milson Moore\, National Fisherman Collection\, LB2012.15.33.

SUMMARY:Themed Walking Tour: Through the Cracks (the people of Searsport whose lives went almost unrecorded)
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, August 10\, 5-8pm click here to see available times\n$25/family (up to 10 people) \nSome lives in Searsport were very well recorded – sea captains kept logs and wrote letters\, their literate wives and children kept diaries.  We talk a lot about these families because we know a lot about them. But those wealthy\, educated families were only a part of the people who lived and worked in Searsport in the nineteenth century.  What about the other people: the servants\, the paupers; those who committed crimes\, those who got divorced?  We will use some of the records still remaining to us to try to uncover some of the other stories of life in 19th century Searsport – stories the respectable families might just as soon not have told. \nOur talented tour guides will lead you around our beautiful campus\, sharing fascinating stories and also allowing you time to visit several exhibits. Tours are $25/family (up to 10 people). Please pre-register.  \nRain or shine. SUMMARY:Themed Walking Tour: Through the Cracks (the people of Searsport whose lives went almost unrecorded)
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, August 3\, 5-8pm click here to see available times\n$25/family (up to 10 people) \nSome lives in Searsport were very well recorded – sea captains kept logs and wrote letters\, their literate wives and children kept diaries. Participants must contact Penobscot Marine Museum before the start time of their scheduled tour for a refund or to reschedule. Email Jeana at jganskop@pmm-maine.org. No-shows will be charged the full rate.
