SUMMARY:Speaker: Cannery Town Listening Sessions with Cipperly Good
DESCRIPTION:While the Maine sardine industry was well documented with oral histories during its heyday in the 20th century\, not much has been recorded now that the industry is no more. PMM curator Cipperly Good is changing that by holding listening sessions with former cannery workers and community members in sardine cannery towns to document the aftermath of the canneries closing and how these communities have revitalized now that a major economic driver has left. Find out what PMM is learning through these listening sessions during this talk. Register here to receive a reminder email. \nFree\, suggested admission $5 \nCaption: Women in a Rockland sardine factory chat while they trim and pack sardines in cans. SUMMARY:Speaker: Show & Tell from the PMM Archives with Paige Lilly
DESCRIPTION:The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation funded a recent project to expand cataloging of 600 log books\, ledgers\, and customs records in the PMM collections. Join us to learn how the work was done and see examples of historical treasures uncovered.  Focusing on instances of emotion found in otherwise routine record books\, the talk highlights the dangers local seagoing families faced at sea during the U.S. Civil War and the risks of commercial shipping under sail even in peacetime. Humor\, empathy\, respect\, and longing reveal the character and circumstances of the writers. Register here to receive a reminder email. \nPaige Lilly held several positions in Maine’s archives and museums\, ranging from the Shaker Library in New Gloucester to the William S. Cohen Papers at the University of Maine in Orono and most recently at the Castine Historical Society. In the 1990s\, she was the librarian/archivist here at PMM.  Paige now offers collections consulting and exhibition planning services from her home office in Blue Hill. \nFree\, Suggested admission $5 \nCaption: From the Journal of schooner C. SUMMARY:Speaker: "Packed Like a Can of Sardines" with Kevin Johnson
DESCRIPTION:The sardine industry supported Maine coastal communities for well over a century. The workforce in canneries included thousands of women\, even more than the number of men fishing for herring. This industry was a part of the economic\, cultural\, and social fabric of families and communities all along our state’s coast. Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson will cast a net into PMM’s photo archives and share many fishy photos and the stories behind them in his presentation. SUMMARY:Speaker: Sardine Carriers with Jon Johansen
DESCRIPTION:For years the sardine industry was a major enterprise and what many remember were the sardine carriers plying the coast bringing the catch to market. The early boats evolved into the impressive carriers of the late 1940s. Penobscot Marine Museum board president Jon Johansen will discuss the design changes. He’ll also share a number of the more noted carriers and where they are today. SUMMARY:Member Monday — We Didn’t Start the Fire
DESCRIPTION:In this Member Monday program\, education director Jeana Ganskop will explore the history of Maine’s fascinating lime industry. People took rock out of the ground\, burned it into something new\, loaded that something new into barrels onboard wooden schooners\, and sailed them to places like New York City where the lime was used in construction. Most of the lime arrived at its destination\, but sometimes the cargo caught fire! We will look at photos and objects from PMM’s collections and we will discuss how the science and history of Maine’s lime industry is highlighted in PMM school programs. \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. These programs are scheduled January through April with one presentation from each of the following departments: Administration\, Curatorial\, Photo Archives\, and Education. \nFree for members. SUMMARY:Rescheduled: Chanteys from the Colcord Collection
DESCRIPTION:Joanna Colcord’s seminal collection Roll and Go: Songs of American Sailormen was deeply influenced by her seafaring life. She was born in the South Pacific to a captain from Searsport\, Maine and attended high school by correspondence in Hong Kong before earning a degree in social work. This presentation explores Colcord’s remarkable global childhood and its influence on her as a noted author of sea music collections still widely consulted today. We will explore domestic life at sea on American sailing ships through Joanna’s eyes\, travel the world with her in maps and globe animations\, and place her in context of other maritime music collectors from J.B. Whall and L.A. Smith to William Doerflinger and Stan Hugill. And naturally\, we will sing some of her chanteys together! \nLynn Noel is a regionally and internationally respected chantey singer with a powerful voice\, a huge repertoire\, and a gift for audience participation. Her Sea Music Singarounds have packed halls to capacity at festivals from New England to Sidmouth (UK). Lynn’s sea music braids together working chanteys from the age of sail; flowing ballads of love\, loss\, and life at sea; environmental education in marine ecology; and a rich knowledge of maritime history with a focus on seafaring women. \nLynn is a professional heritage interpreter and independent scholar in geography\, history\, and folklore. A former research fellow of the Institute of Arctic Studies at Dartmouth College\, Lynn founded Digital Heritage Consulting to bring traditional song and heritage arts online to create digital community\, with projects like the Mermaid’s Tavern online folk club and DIY Digital life coaching for artists and nonprofits seeking to adopt digital tools. Lynn’s undergraduate and graduate work in geography and women’s studies prepared her well to explore and appreciate the personal and professional life of Joanna Colcord as a social scientist and world traveler. Lynn owns a well-loved 1924 first edition of Roll and Go: Songs of American Sailormen. \nOn Zoom or in person at PMM’s Old Vestry building\, 2 Church St. \nFree to attend. Suggested admission $5. Register here. \nThis program has been generously supported by the Yardarm Motel.

SUMMARY:Member Monday — Rockland Photographer Jim Moore in the Spotlight
DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, PMM was able to acquire six binders full of maritime related photographic negatives taken by Rockport photographer Jim Moore. Moore was an established newspaper photographer who spent most of his career as the midcoast correspondent for the Portland Press Herald and other Gannett Publishing papers. He was a contemporary and friend of Kosti Ruohomaa and Carroll Thayer Berry\, and together they published The Maine Coastal Portrait in 1959. PMM Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson will share a peek into the Moore Collection as a preview of our upcoming April exhibit at the Camden Library. \n\n\nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. SUMMARY:Member Monday — Digitizing the Chart Collection
DESCRIPTION:Join Cipperly Good for our February Member Monday presentation where we check out the new chart digitization rig. The PMM Collection is full of nautical charts with handwritten notes by navigators about the weather\, events on board\, and the best place to provision. These large charts are difficult to photograph at a high enough resolution to see these notations. Our solution was to build a camera rig that photographs the chart in smaller segments and “stitch” them together with software. We will give you a sneak peek into the process as we get these charts digitized and available on our website. \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. Beginning in 2024\, Member Monday programs are scheduled January through April with one presentation from each of the following departments: Administration\, Curatorial\, Photo Archives\, and Education. Not a member? Join here. \nPhoto: Cipperly Good\, the Richard Saltonstall Jr. Curator of Maritime History\, directs Matt Wheeler\, the Digital Curator\, to move the camera rig to the next position to capture a segment of a nautical chart.

SUMMARY:Maritime & Maine Topics Author Series—Mark Borton
DESCRIPTION:Author Mark Borton will reveal the full story that is documented in his new book\, Moondoggle: Franklin Roosevelt and the Fight for Tidal-Electric Power at Passamaquoddy Bay. “Quoddy” was to be built off the coast of Maine and New Brunswick and would generate enough electricity to power much of New England. It was part of Roosevelt’s trust-busting “public power” initiatives such as the Boulder Dam and the Tennessee Valley Authority. FDR’s pioneering project was highly controversial and full of intrigue. \nThe Island Institute’s Working Waterfront said Moondoggle: Franklin Roosevelt and the Fight for Tidal-Electric Power at Passamaquoddy Bay (Down East Books\, 2023) is “A fascinating work that goes beyond history to include society\, culture\, politics\, and community… This absorbing story informs us about where Maine is today.” \nFree\, Suggested admission $5\, register here \nPhoto: Mark Borton at Beaver Brook as it falls into Passamaquoddy Bay\, Calais\, Maine.

SUMMARY:Member Monday - To Peru in 2023 and 1863
DESCRIPTION:After returning to Maine from Peru\, this summer’s Geiger Museum Exploration Intern Judson Thomas looked for connections within the Penobscot Marine Museum collection. He found four logbooks that mention Peru and he transcribed a portion of the 1863 logbook of the ship WELLFLEET kept by American captain\, Henry S. Rich\, of Bucksport\, ME. In this Member Monday\, Education Director Jeana Ganskop will share the process she and Judson went through to find a logbook and some interesting portions of the one Judson worked on. \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate monthly Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. SUMMARY:Member Monday - Sam Murfitt and Maine’s Working Waterfronts
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Sam Murfitt has spent most of his life connected with the water—while making photographs\, building boats\, and working for fishing publications. For decades\, he has photographed fishermen\, their work\, and their boats\, and in that work\, has come to see their way of life as finite and fleeting. His images document that lifestyle and offer a window into Maine’s working waterfronts and boatbuilding traditions. In this Member Monday\, PMM Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson talks with Sam about his work and they explore a few images from the 2023 exhibit “Maine’s Working Waterfronts.” \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate monthly Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. SUMMARY:Member Monday - The Colcord Collection with Cipperly Good and MP Bogan
DESCRIPTION:Joanna Carver Colcord and her brother Lincoln Ross Colcord were influential locally\, nationally\, and internationally in the first half of the Twentieth Century. We love them for co-founding Penobscot Marine Museum with other children of sea captains\, but in addition\, each made huge contributions to the literature and documentation of the American and global merchant marine. In their own rights\, Joanna was a noted social worker and Lincoln a political commentator. \nThanks to an impressive 114 cubic feet of archives related to the siblings donated between 2005 and 2021\, researchers can delve into the various topics of which the Colcords were experts. As the collection has been donated piecemeal\, it has been the job of Cipperly Good\, the Richard Saltonstall Jr. Curator of Maritime History\, and her crack team of volunteers to reorganize and rewrite the finding aid to provide better access to researchers. The most current volunteer to tackle the project is MP Bogan\, a retired book conservator. \nCipperly and MP will give a behind the scenes look at the Colcord Collection- highlighting some of their favorite finds while sorting the papers and giving a brief overview of how the collection was categorized by topic. \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate monthly Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. Topics vary every month—it’s a fun way to take a close look at items in our collections and get a peek behind the scenes at PMM. Not a member? SUMMARY:Stories from the Spirits of Sea-Goers II
DESCRIPTION:October 28th\, 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, suggested admission $5\nReserve your tickets here. \nThe people of Searsport and Penobscot Bay have a long history of going to sea. SUMMARY:Maine’s First Ship
DESCRIPTION:October 21st\, 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, suggested admission $5\nReserve your tickets here. \nThe VIRGINIA was the first ocean-going vessel built by the English in North America. In 1607 King James I granted a land-use charter to the Virginia Company to establish permanent settlements in the New World. The Company offered two investment opportunities – one based in London and the other in Plymouth. The London-based company founded a colony which they called Jamestown\, in land we now call Virginia. The Plymouth-based company attempted a settlement at the mouth of the Kennebec River in what has become known as the Popham Colony. The settlers were unprepared for the harshness of the Maine winter and\, after 14 months\, gave up their colonial effort. During that period\, however\, the colonists constructed a “30 tonne” vessel with which they intended to explore the coastline of the New World for profitable resources for their investors. They named their ship VIRGINIA OF SAGADAHOC and\, when the settlement was abandoned in the summer of 1608\, the colonists sailed her back to England.  \nFor the past ten years volunteers in Bath\, Maine\, have been working with Maine’s First Ship to re-construct the VIRGINIA. In this program\, Jim Parmentier will share more about this incredible project. You can follow their work at the MFS website www.mfship.org.

SUMMARY:Hemp and American Maritime History
DESCRIPTION:October 14th\, 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, suggested admission $5\nReserve your tickets here. \nHemp has played a vital role in our history\, including maritime history. It was a part of daily life until the mid-20th century. This session will explore the history of Cannabis Sativa as an agricultural and industrial product\, as well as understanding the difference in the types of cannabis such as marijuana. \nPeter Friesen received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from New Mexico State University\, focusing on History with a minor in Anthropology. He went on to receive his master’s degree in public history in 2006. During his senior year at NMSU Peter decided to focus on a career in living history. He took an internship at Valley Forge National Historic Park\, where he interpreted in 3 rd person\, did black powder demonstrations\, helped the archaeologists dig\, and manned the visitor center desk. After graduating\, Peter decided to attend graduate school and focus on public history. While there he took part in a class called Time Traveling where he learned about first person interpretation. His degree plan included a research paper of journal length and quality and several hours interning at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival assisting the supply coordinator. His research paper titled Hemp\, History and Museums\, looked at how marijuana laws have affected public perception of hemp and how it is interpreted in living history museums. This led Peter to Colonial Williamsburg where he worked for two years finishing his research and completing a master’s degree. During this time\, he started to look for a living history museum that also incorporated agriculture\, which is how he came to be at HSMC. After his first year at HSMC\, he received the New Professional Travel Award for the National Council of Public History’s annual conference in Louisville\, KY where he presented his research on Hemp and Museums. Peter has continued his agricultural research to include tobacco\, apples\, livestock\, and other aspects of colonial farming life. Peter is also active in the larger museum profession. He has presented at several conferences and is currently on the board of directors for both the Association of Living History Farm and Agricultural museums and the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum. Peter also serves on the museum studies steering committee at St. Mary’s College of Maryland as well as teaching museum studies.

DESCRIPTION:Monday\, July 12\nNoon\nFree for members \nIn the 1880s\, well-to-do urban dwellers escaped the summer heat and crowds of the city for the ocean breezes of North Haven and Vinalhaven\, islands in Penobscot Bay. Unlike the rich who built large summer cottages on Mount Desert Island\, these “rusticators” preferred roughing it in the farmhouses along the Fox Island Thorofare.  Among those who escaped the city was Tucker Daland\, a Harvard-trained lawyer with an interest in sailboat racing and rowing\, who amassed a collection of sailing and rowing boats.  Daland’s collection of boats\, sail racing and cruising memorabilia\, and clothing will be the focus of July’s Member Mondays\, as Penobscot Marine Museum Curator Cipperly Good tells the tales of rusticators on Penobscot Bay.  \nMember Monday programs are a member benefit – Look for the Zoom link in your monthly member email. Not a member? Join today to take advantage of unique opportunities like this one and to support the ongoing educational and preservation efforts of the Museum.
