SUMMARY:Member Monday - Kevin Johnson presents the Josh Curtis Collection
DESCRIPTION:Josh Curtis considered Searsport to be his home even though he lived away for most of his life. He was passionate about the town’s history and he collected historical photos and negatives. He also made photographs himself of the historic homes and he never missed a parade. His photo collection was donated to PMM in 2008 by his cousin Arthur. PMM Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson will share some of the most significant images from his collection and show what these views look like today. \nMember Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate monthly Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. Topics vary every month – it’s a fun way to take a close look at items in our collections and get a peek behind the scenes at PMM. \nFree for members. Not a member? Join here.

SUMMARY:Stories from the Spirits of Sea-Goers II
DESCRIPTION:October 28th\, 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, suggested admission $5\nReserve your tickets here. \nThe people of Searsport and Penobscot Bay have a long history of going to sea. In letters\, diaries\, logbooks\, photos\, newspaper articles\, and stories passed down through generations\, they recorded their experiences. Quiet days\, adventure\, tragedy\, and heroism each take their turn. This sequel to 2020’s “Stories from the Spirits of Sea-Goers” features tales based on true experiences and recorded by Penobscot Marine Museum volunteers and staff. Some stories might be scary or inappropriate for young audiences. \nThis program features recorded portrayals based on Penobscot Marine Museum’s in-person events “Ripped from the Headlines” and “Twilight Tours.” Get excited for this year’s program by watching last year’s “Stories from the Spirits of Sea-Goers.”

SUMMARY:Maine’s First Ship
DESCRIPTION:October 21st\, 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, suggested admission $5\nReserve your tickets here. \nThe VIRGINIA was the first ocean-going vessel built by the English in North America. In 1607 King James I granted a land-use charter to the Virginia Company to establish permanent settlements in the New World. The Company offered two investment opportunities – one based in London and the other in Plymouth. The London-based company founded a colony which they called Jamestown\, in land we now call Virginia. The Plymouth-based company attempted a settlement at the mouth of the Kennebec River in what has become known as the Popham Colony. The settlers were unprepared for the harshness of the Maine winter and\, after 14 months\, gave up their colonial effort. During that period\, however\, the colonists constructed a “30 tonne” vessel with which they intended to explore the coastline of the New World for profitable resources for their investors. They named their ship VIRGINIA OF SAGADAHOC and\, when the settlement was abandoned in the summer of 1608\, the colonists sailed her back to England.  \nFor the past ten years volunteers in Bath\, Maine\, have been working with Maine’s First Ship to re-construct the VIRGINIA. In this program\, Jim Parmentier will share more about this incredible project. You can follow their work at the MFS website www.mfship.org.

SUMMARY:Hemp and American Maritime History
DESCRIPTION:October 14th\, 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, suggested admission $5\nReserve your tickets here. \nHemp has played a vital role in our history\, including maritime history. It was a part of daily life until the mid-20th century. This session will explore the history of Cannabis Sativa as an agricultural and industrial product\, as well as understanding the difference in the types of cannabis such as marijuana. \nPeter Friesen received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from New Mexico State University\, focusing on History with a minor in Anthropology. He went on to receive his master’s degree in public history in 2006. During his senior year at NMSU Peter decided to focus on a career in living history. He took an internship at Valley Forge National Historic Park\, where he interpreted in 3 rd person\, did black powder demonstrations\, helped the archaeologists dig\, and manned the visitor center desk. After graduating\, Peter decided to attend graduate school and focus on public history. While there he took part in a class called Time Traveling where he learned about first person interpretation. His degree plan included a research paper of journal length and quality and several hours interning at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival assisting the supply coordinator. His research paper titled Hemp\, History and Museums\, looked at how marijuana laws have affected public perception of hemp and how it is interpreted in living history museums. This led Peter to Colonial Williamsburg where he worked for two years finishing his research and completing a master’s degree. During this time\, he started to look for a living history museum that also incorporated agriculture\, which is how he came to be at HSMC. After his first year at HSMC\, he received the New Professional Travel Award for the National Council of Public History’s annual conference in Louisville\, KY where he presented his research on Hemp and Museums. Peter has continued his agricultural research to include tobacco\, apples\, livestock\, and other aspects of colonial farming life. Peter is also active in the larger museum profession. He has presented at several conferences and is currently on the board of directors for both the Association of Living History Farm and Agricultural museums and the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum. Peter also serves on the museum studies steering committee at St. Mary’s College of Maryland as well as teaching museum studies.

SUMMARY:Member Mondays on Zoom - Rusticators on Penobscot Bay
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, July 12\nNoon\nFree for members \nIn the 1880s\, well-to-do urban dwellers escaped the summer heat and crowds of the city for the ocean breezes of North Haven and Vinalhaven\, islands in Penobscot Bay. Unlike the rich who built large summer cottages on Mount Desert Island\, these “rusticators” preferred roughing it in the farmhouses along the Fox Island Thorofare.  Among those who escaped the city was Tucker Daland\, a Harvard-trained lawyer with an interest in sailboat racing and rowing\, who amassed a collection of sailing and rowing boats.  Daland’s collection of boats\, sail racing and cruising memorabilia\, and clothing will be the focus of July’s Member Mondays\, as Penobscot Marine Museum Curator Cipperly Good tells the tales of rusticators on Penobscot Bay.  \nMember Monday programs are a member benefit – Look for the Zoom link in your monthly member email. Not a member? Join today to take advantage of unique opportunities like this one and to support the ongoing educational and preservation efforts of the Museum.

SUMMARY:Kosti Ruohomaa’s Beloved Maine
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Kosti Ruohomaa. View from Ruohomaa’s Farm on Dodge Mt. Rockland\, Maine \nMay 20th at 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, register here \nKosti Ruohomaa’s Beloved Maine\, a slideshow and lecture by Deanna Bonner-Ganter\, focuses on Rockland\, Maine photographer Kosti Ruohomaa’s Maine photographs. Deanna Bonner-Ganter is the perfect guide to explore Ruohomaa’s work and legacy. She spent more than 30 years researching his life and work. In 2016\, her definitive biography\, Kosti Ruohomaa Photographer Poet was published by Downeast Books. She recently retired from the Maine State Museum in Augusta where she spent her career as a curator. \nRuohomaa was a storyteller with his camera. He captured the spirit and culture of Maine through its people and landscape like few other photographers have ever done. Ruohomaa’s photographs were featured in various publications including Life Magazine\, Look\, National Geographic\, Ladies Home Journal\, and Down East. In 2018\, a large collection of Ruohomaa’s work was given to Penobscot Marine Museum by his agency\, Black Star of New York. This collection is a remarkable resource. While his published work is fairly well known\, it represents less than 10% of the photographs he made; the rest of his photographs had never been seen by the general public.

SUMMARY:Learning with the Museum: Using objects to spark discussions and make history tangible
DESCRIPTION:May 13th at 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, register here. \nJoin PMM Education Director Jeana Ganskop and Museum Educator/Lead Interpreter Sarah Cole as we discuss and share methods for using artifacts and primary sources to bring history to life. This program is great for teachers and parents\, grandparents\, and other members of the public interested in creating meaning between the history we learn in school and family heirlooms or objects we see in museums. Jeana will start by sharing a portion of PMM’s high school/college “Power & Protest” remote program where participants examine a variety of museum objects and discuss how these objects could represent power\, protest\, or both. Then Sarah will lead participants in thoughtfully considering 3 different artifacts and primary sources followed by brainstorming and practicing ways to use these objects to talk about historical topics. After this program\, participants will feel more comfortable using objects to talk about history\, whether it’s in the classroom\, at a museum\, or at home. Click here to register.

SUMMARY:Member Monday - Matt Wheeler presents Peggy McKenna’s Ode to Waldo County
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, February 8th\nNoon\nFree for members \nPeggy McKenna\, a Pennsylvania native\, landed in Montville\, Maine\, in 1971. She was part of the first wave of “back-to-the-landers\,” young ideologues wanting simple\, rural lives. The people she came to know and appreciate— locals with long roots and transplants like herself— were frequent subjects of her photography\, both as a journalist for the upstart Waldo Independent and as a resident of Montville growing roots of her own. Join PMM Digital Curator Matt Wheeler for a retrospective of Peggy’s work. \nMember Monday programs are a member benefit – look for them on the second Monday of each month. Not a member?
