With records from sailors\, captains\, fishermen\, shipbuilders\, and other Penobscot Bay residents over the past 250 years\, there’s a lot here. Join us for a look at the letters\, diaries\, logbooks\, and other manuscripts in PMM’s collection and hear some of the great stories we uncovered during this winter’s cataloging project. Click here to register. \nProject Archivist Libby Meier is an archivist and historian focused on Maine’s maritime history. She was previously a project archivist at the Maine Maritime Museum and wrote a master’s thesis on Maine-built ships for the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture. Her diverse career has also included working as an interpreter at Mystic Seaport Museum and as a sailor on traditionally-rigged tall ships. Libby has been at PMM since the fall of 2020 on a special project to catalog and write finding aids for the museum’s extensive manuscript collections.

Rockland\, Maine \nMay 20th at 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, register here \nKosti Ruohomaa’s Beloved Maine\, a slideshow and lecture by Deanna Bonner-Ganter\, focuses on Rockland\, Maine photographer Kosti Ruohomaa’s Maine photographs. Deanna Bonner-Ganter is the perfect guide to explore Ruohomaa’s work and legacy. She spent more than 30 years researching his life and work. In 2016\, her definitive biography\, Kosti Ruohomaa Photographer Poet was published by Downeast Books. She recently retired from the Maine State Museum in Augusta where she spent her career as a curator.  \nRuohomaa was a storyteller with his camera. He captured the spirit and culture of Maine through its people and landscape like few other photographers have ever done. Ruohomaa’s photographs were featured in various publications including Life Magazine\, Look\, National Geographic\, Ladies Home Journal\, and Down East. In 2018\, a large collection of Ruohomaa’s work was given to Penobscot Marine Museum by his agency\, Black Star of New York. This collection is a remarkable resource. While his published work is fairly well known\, it represents less than 10% of the photographs he made; the rest of his photographs had never been seen by the general public.

SUMMARY:Learning with the Museum: Using objects to spark discussions and make history tangible
DESCRIPTION:May 13th at 6pm on Zoom\nFree\, register here. \nJoin PMM Education Director Jeana Ganskop and Museum Educator/Lead Interpreter Sarah Cole as we discuss and share methods for using artifacts and primary sources to bring history to life. This program is great for teachers and parents\, grandparents\, and other members of the public interested in creating meaning between the history we learn in school and family heirlooms or objects we see in museums. Jeana will start by sharing a portion of PMM’s high school/college “Power & Protest” remote program where participants examine a variety of museum objects and discuss how these objects could represent power\, protest\, or both. Then Sarah will lead participants in thoughtfully considering 3 different artifacts and primary sources followed by brainstorming and practicing ways to use these objects to talk about historical topics. After this program\, participants will feel more comfortable using objects to talk about history\, whether it’s in the classroom\, at a museum\, or at home. Click here to register.

HERSEY had a colorful history\, most notably losing three Searsport captains in less than three years. Even the delivery of the ship’s planking and spars for building ended in disaster\, with the delivery vessel sinking in a gale and the captain Forrest Treat losing appendages to frostbite.  He is pictured above with two of his canes.  Come learn more at April’s Member Monday on April 12 at noon.

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, February 23rd\n7pm\nFree \nFight the midwinter cabin fever! Test your knowledge of the people\, places\, and things in some of the most popular maritime books and movies at our Maritime Media Trivia Night! Trivia will be Tuesdays February 23rd through March 23rd starting at 7PM\, and each week’s session will be dedicated to either maritime literature or maritime film. The game and instructions will be offered through Zoom\, so make sure you’ve got your laptop\, smartphone\, or tablet all charged up. We hope you can join us for a weekly dose of trivia fun. Dust off that copy of Moby Dick and look around for that Jaws VHS – you have some studying to do! \nWe will be using Zoom and Kahoot for each of our sessions. We encourage you to have a laptop AND a smartphone\, tablet\, or other device on hand! Use your laptop to join the Zoom meeting so you can see the event host’s shared screen along with your fellow trivia lovers. Then\, use your other device to go to www.kahoot.it\, or download the Kahoot app\, and enter in the game PIN that will be displayed on Zoom. This will allow you to see the trivia questions and answer choices on the Zoom screen\, and then select the answer on your other device. If you don’t have another device handy\, that’s no problem! SUMMARY:Fishermen’s Mittens Zoom Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Part I on Thursday\, February 18th and Part II on Thursday\, March 4th \nSessions start at 6pm\n$40/participant\, including shipping. Register here.\nRegister by February 10th to ensure your materials arrive with time to start knitting before the workshop\nFor intermediate to experienced knitters \nBefore rubber gloves\, a fisherman’s wife or mother or an enterprising home economist knit mittens\, experimenting with the design to produce a warm\, durable mitten. Fannie Johnson\, who made three pairs of mittens in the PMM collection\, followed a double-knit\, shrunk-down type pattern from the late 1930s. This set of two workshops is part history\, part DIY.  \nIncluded with the workshop fee\, participants will receive by mail 2 skeins of Bartlett 2-ply fisherman yarn and 4 number four double-pointed needles. Participants should start their mitten project before the first workshop. The pattern is available here. During part one of the Zoom workshop on February 18th\, PMM curator Cipperly Good will first share the history of fishermen’s mittens in Maine and the Canadian Maritimes. Then she will continue with describing her experience knitting fishermen’s mittens and some tips to get around the tough parts.  \nOn March 4th\, in part two of the workshop\, Cipperly will discuss fulling and felting and share the process she went through to complete her fishermen’s mittens. Enjoy close up views and interesting stories\, plus an opportunity to ask your own questions and chat with PMM staff!  \nOn this Monday\, Curator Cipperly Good will talk about Henry Starrett\, who’s career spanned more than two decades as captain of four vessels and his voyages took him to ports on at least four continents. His wife\, Ellen Cutter Starrett\, and later his two children\, Anne and Francis\, often accompanied him. In his downtime at sea and in port\, which was not often\, he built the model of the FRANK N. SUMMARY:October Speaker Series Zoom: Quintessential Maine Boats with Curator Cipperly Good
DESCRIPTION:October 15\n6pm\nFree\, registration required \nCipperly Good\, PMM Curator\, will present a look at three quintessential Maine boats: the Wabanaki birchbark canoe\, Matinicus double-ender\, and Jonesporter lobsterboat. Each of these boats are designed for fishing in Maine’s coastal waters. The ocean-going birchbark canoes had higher bows and sterns for navigating the ocean waves\, and a round belly to act as a stable platform for spearing fish. The Matinicus double-ender\, a full-bellied rowing boat\, which cut through the waves and provided a stable platform for lobstermen\, found its genesis in the Wabanaki birchbark canoe. The Jonesporter lobsterboat had its origins in a double-ender adapted into a pumpkinseed shape to accommodate an engine.  Come learn more how Maine geography influenced the design of these unique boats. SUMMARY:October Speaker Series on Zoom: Kosti Ruohomaa and Maine’s Bygone Log Drives with Digital Collections Curator Matt Wheeler
DESCRIPTION:October 8\n6pm\nFree\, registration required \nIn the early days of interior commercial logging\, passage by river was the sole means of moving timber from stump to sawmill. By the time photojournalist Kosti Ruohomaa photographed a series of Maine log drives in the 1950s\, river driving was only used on remote stretches of water where roads had not yet been built or improved for large trucks. It was labor intensive: skilled crews ushered logs downstream with hand tools\, relying on strength\, agility\, mettle\, and “keeping your head in the game”. The work was a spectacle and made for dynamic photographs; this was good fodder for Ruohomaa’s camera. \nUsing a selection of these images\, PMM Digital Collections Curator Matt Wheeler will give us a glimpse of a lost enterprise; the subculture that grew up around it has made a lasting image in our historical mind’s eye.
