Then she will continue with describing her experience knitting fishermen’s mittens and some tips to get around the tough parts. \nOn March 4th\, in part two of the workshop\, Cipperly will discuss fulling and felting and share the process she went through to complete her fishermen’s mittens. SUMMARY:Member Mondays on Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, November 9\nNoon and lasts around 20 minutes\nFREE\, Members Only \nJoin Penobscot Marine Museum Curatorial Staff for live lunchtime Zoom presentations. Rotating between Curator Cipperly Good\, Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson\, and Digital Collections Curator Matt Wheeler\, each week a different staff member will focus on one of their favorite artifacts or collections. Enjoy close up views and interesting stories\, plus an opportunity to ask your own questions and chat with PMM staff! \nOn this Monday\, Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson presents Gems of the PMM Photo Archives. What distinguishes an image? Is it the drama of the moment\, the artistic qualities of its composition\, the expression on a face\, the time in history it represents\, or the way light played with the subject? Knowing the story behind an image can deepen one’s appreciation of it. In 2015 we created the 20 Best exhibit to share what our staff felt were the best photos from our collections. A lot of new photos have been added since then. Photo archivist Kevin Johnson will share some of these “new” and existing treasures and examine the reasons they stand out.  \nNot a member? Join today to take advantage of unique opportunities like this one and to support the ongoing educational and preservation efforts of the Museum. \nThis programming has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor. SUMMARY:October Speaker Series Zoom: Quintessential Maine Boats with Curator Cipperly Good
DESCRIPTION:October 15\n6pm\nFree\, registration required \nCipperly Good\, PMM Curator\, will present a look at three quintessential Maine boats: the Wabanaki birchbark canoe\, Matinicus double-ender\, and Jonesporter lobsterboat. Each of these boats are designed for fishing in Maine’s coastal waters. The ocean-going birchbark canoes had higher bows and sterns for navigating the ocean waves\, and a round belly to act as a stable platform for spearing fish. The Matinicus double-ender\, a full-bellied rowing boat\, which cut through the waves and provided a stable platform for lobstermen\, found its genesis in the Wabanaki birchbark canoe. The Jonesporter lobsterboat had its origins in a double-ender adapted into a pumpkinseed shape to accommodate an engine.  Come learn more how Maine geography influenced the design of these unique boats. SUMMARY:October Speaker Series on Zoom: Kosti Ruohomaa and Maine’s Bygone Log Drives with Digital Collections Curator Matt Wheeler
DESCRIPTION:October 8\n6pm\nFree\, registration required \nIn the early days of interior commercial logging\, passage by river was the sole means of moving timber from stump to sawmill. By the time photojournalist Kosti Ruohomaa photographed a series of Maine log drives in the 1950s\, river driving was only used on remote stretches of water where roads had not yet been built or improved for large trucks. It was labor intensive: skilled crews ushered logs downstream with hand tools\, relying on strength\, agility\, mettle\, and “keeping your head in the game”. The work was a spectacle and made for dynamic photographs; this was good fodder for Ruohomaa’s camera. \nUsing a selection of these images\, PMM Digital Collections Curator Matt Wheeler will give us a glimpse of a lost enterprise; the subculture that grew up around it has made a lasting image in our historical mind’s eye. SUMMARY:Richard Ames - Risky Business: A Maine Village Goes Global
DESCRIPTION:Richard Ames \nJuly 30\n6pm\nFree \nRichard M. Ames\, guest curator and author\, will give a talk on his research into ships built at Castine and their voyages that highlight the people and the risks involved in Castine’s 19th century global trade. As a youngster\, Ames spent summers in Castine at the Whitney House\, built in 1810 by his direct ancestors\, Captain Henry and Lucy Perkins Whitney. During these visits he became fascinated by his family’s deep ties to the period of maritime trade which brought Castine considerable prosperity. For the last decade\, Ames has researched Castine shipbuilding and international trade. His work provided the foundation for the Historical Society’s 2019 exhibit\, Risky Business: Square-Rigged Ships and Salted Fish. Ames wrote a companion book\, Risky Business: A Maine Village Goes Global\, to accompany the exhibit. The book is available for sale online at castinehistoricalsociety.org. \nRichard and his wife\, Laura\, have three grown children and spend their time between Kiawah Island\, S. C. and Highlands\, N. C. and visit Castine in the summer. Richard has previously written articles on family history published in the Historical Society’s newsletter\, The Castine Visitor. The Deborah Pulliam Memorial Lectures began in 2008 to honor the memory and achievements of Deborah Pulliam. Ms. Pulliam\, who died in 2007\, generously supported organizations in Castine and beyond. She was an active member of the Castine Historical Society and served as the editor of The Castine Visitor for six years. \nRegister here. \nHelp support programs like this by becoming a member or making a donation. \nThis programming has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor.
