Early in his study of photography, Ruohomaa dropped by the Angora Rancho farm in Van Nuys, California. The U.S. had recently entered WWII; Angora rabbits are raised for their hair, which was used to line parachutes that were being manufactured for the war effort. At this farm, the hair was clipped every three months. The more common method of harvesting Angora hair is plucking, which is more time consuming but results in longer fibers. Kosti documented the care, feeding, and clipping of the rabbits. Kosti wrote humorous captions for eight of the photos, imagining the “trials and tribulations” of a rabbit protesting its meager rations. (From Kosti Ruohomaa’s notes)
