Richard Nixon in Maine

In September of 1952, then-Senator Richard Nixon campaigned in Maine as the vice presidential running mate to Dwight Eisenhower. He landed in Waterville where he met with Maine politicians including Senator Margaret Chase Smith, and Governor Frederick Payne, as well as supporters such as the Young Republicans. Nixon gave speeches and shook hands in Waterville, Skowhegan, Pittsfield, Bangor, and Rockland, and visited a fair, a lobster pound, and other local sites. Kosti Ruohomaa took hundreds of photographs of the events for Life magazine, but it seems someone else’s photo of Nixon in Maine was selected and published in the article “The Campaign Busts Wide Open in the Opening Quarter” on page 31 of Vol. 33, No. 11 Sept. 15, 1952, along with other images from around the country, under the subheading “Candidates are Not Teams’ Only Stars.”
