Lobster Price Fixing

In 1957 the price of lobsters dropped to 30 cents a pound, barely covering the expenses for lobstermen of keeping a boat and gear. The fishermen, who organized under the recently-formed Maine Lobstermen’s Association, decided to put the screws to the buyers: they stayed tied up at the dock for a week, choking the supply. The battle between lobster dealers and lobstermen got the attention of the FBI and ultimately led to an antitrust case in Federal court, which was heard in Portland, Maine. Kosti Ruohomaa took hundreds of photographs documenting the lobstermen just before the case went to court in May of 1958. Kosti researched and wrote an article and composed captions for 14 of his photographs, which were published in Maine Coast Fishermen in May of 1958.
