Maine Fish Dragger

In July of 1957, Ruohomaa went on a 10-day voyage to the Grand Banks on the Quincy, a steel hulled, deep sea commercial trawler, which was skippered by Jim Farrell of Rockland. They fished through a nor’easter and rough seas that made for challenging conditions for the photographer. He noted: “Deep-sea fishing requires a crew of seasoned men, born to the sea, men accustomed to working around the clock, handling gear in punishing seas, and sleeping dog tired in wet clothes.” An ASMP Infinity editor noted: “Trawlermen on the Grand Banks, in which Kosti Ruohomaa used natural light with dramatic artistry in an unusual picture story.” Photos from this trip were published in National Fisherman, Chevrolet Friends, and True: The Men’s Magazine.
