In this Member Monday program, education director Jeana Ganskop will explore the history of Maine’s fascinating lime industry. People took rock out of the ground, burned it into something new, loaded that something new into barrels onboard wooden schooners, and sailed them to places like New York City where the lime was used in construction. Most of the lime arrived at its destination, but sometimes the cargo caught fire! We will look at photos and objects from PMM’s collections and we will discuss how the science and history of Maine’s lime industry is highlighted in PMM school programs.

Member Mondays are included as a member benefit and feature intimate Zoom lunchtime programs presented by staff members. These programs are scheduled January through April with one presentation from each of the following departments: Administration, Curatorial, Photo Archives, and Education.
