Maybe you have read Joanna Colcord’s Roll and Go: Songs of American Sailormen (celebrating 100 years since it was first published in 1924!). Or perhaps you’re familiar with Joanna’s publications and professional career in social work. Maybe you’re wondering if she’s the sister of author and historian Lincoln Colcord. Or it’s possible you’ve never heard of her at all! Although she was born at sea in 1882, Joanna had deep roots in Searsport and a life dedicated to her profession, her interest in maritime history and culture, and her family. The Penobscot Marine Museum archive has a wealth of documents written by or relating to Joanna Colcord. In this talk, Penobscot Marine Museum Education Director Jeana Ganskop will share documents that help to fill in the gaps between Joanna’s public image and the person behind it. Hear an essay she wrote in college, see her process of collecting chanteys, and peek into her later life after her retirement. Register here.
On Zoom or in person at PMM’s Old Vestry building, 2 Church St.
