In the 1880s, well-to-do urban dwellers escaped the summer heat and crowds of the city for the ocean breezes of North Haven and Vinalhaven, islands in Penobscot Bay. Unlike the rich who built large summer cottages on Mount Desert Island, these “rusticators” preferred roughing it in the farmhouses along the Fox Island Thorofare. Among those who escaped the city was Tucker Daland, a Harvard-trained lawyer with an interest in sailboat racing and rowing, who amassed a collection of sailing and rowing boats. Daland’s collection of boats, sail racing and cruising memorabilia, and clothing will be the focus of July’s Member Mondays, as Penobscot Marine Museum Curator Cipperly Good tells the tales of rusticators on Penobscot Bay.
