George McEvoy Crosses the Bar

By Kevin Johnson, Photo Archivist

We lost a big supporter and true friend when George McEvoy passed away recently. He led a most remarkable life and left his mark on the Boothbay Region. His obituary in the Boothbay Register highlights his many accomplishments, and it makes it clear why he was loved and respected by so many people. I connected with George early in my time at PMM when he reached out to voice his interest in our photo collections. When we created the exhibit Lincoln County Through the Eastern Eye, he asked to host it at the Boothbay Railway Museum. He adoptedall the Boothbay area negatives in our Adopt-a-Town program and became a regular guest at our galas. He and his trusted skipper, Bob Ryan, made many visits to the PMM Photo Archives and provided descriptions and stories for the numerous photos taken by Red Boutilier on the SHERMAN ZWICKER, George’s Grand Banks schooner. Our biggest project started three years ago when he asked me to work on a photo book of Boothbay. We had many fun days traveling around the greater Boothbay region making photographs and talking with long-time residents to obtain the stories to accompany the photos. The week before he passed I was finally able to show him the nearly complete book, and he seemed very pleased. One last gift for the place and people that were so dear to him.

News from the Education Department

It’s wonderful to see the museum campus busy with people again! We welcomed hundreds of students to the museum from mid-May through mid-June. With our talented museum interpreters as guides, the students participated in the Set Sail demonstration, sang sea chanteys, toured the Fowler-True-Ross House, examined primary sources, and made paper boats, lighthouses, and more. A big thank you to our field trip staff: Faith, Camden, Nate, Willa, Naomi, Sherry, Pen, Megan, Felix, Ciara, Ember, Malia and our fabulous volunteer Anne!
