  • Borne on the Wind Presentation and Signing

    John R. Anderson will discuss his new book Borne on the Wind: the Life and Journals of Captain Anders Anderson. The story is of a Swedish immigrant, Captain Anderson, who sailed schooners out of Stonington, Camden, and Rockland in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Books will be available for sale, and the author will be signing copies.

    11:30am-Noon - Yard in the Yard Demonstration Help furl the square sails on our Downeaster mast in the yard.

    1pm - Model Pumpkin Boat Competition II Bring your model pumpkin boat to compete in our second annual competition. *$5 registration fee, free museum admission with model pumpkin boat entry. See details below.

    2pm-5pm - Scarecrow vignette building. Help museum staff & volunteers create this year’s Fling Into Fall scarecrow vignette to be entered into the scarecrow competition on October 12th.

  • Model Pumpkin Boat Competition

    $5 registration fee

    In the second year of this event, we challenge you to make a model boat out of a Pumpkin! Bring your model pumpkin boat to the Penobscot Marine Museum on Saturday October 5th to compete. PMM staff will judge entries using a point system based on size, composition, creative use of pumpkin, overall look, ability to float, and speed. The winner will receive 50% of the proceeds and the other 50% will go to the Penobscot Marine Museum to help support programming like this!

  • Maine Marine Fare: Speaker Series with Anne Hayden

    Anne Hayden, Senior Fisheries Program Manager at Manomet, will share a presentation including what fisheries in Maine used to look like, where things stand today, why the lobster fishery is thriving but the groundfishery isn’t, and an outlook on the future. In addition to developing a market for green crabs, this presentation also covers other projects Manomet is working on including shellfish aquaculture and river herring restoration.

    Baldwin launched Educational Passages as a project to spread ocean and environmental literacy. Their GPS-equipped MiniBoats follow ocean currents and winds, allowing students of all ages to explore oceanic phenomena while we develop transoceanic classrooms. Dick's talk will include photos and video from his most recent MiniBoat launch from the University of Maine Marine Science Club and the United Center of Technologies in Bangor off the Cape of Good Hope.

  • Speaker: Weather with Dr. Sean Birkel

    Dr. Sean Birkel, Maine State Climatologist, will speak on how the Penobscot Bay froze during the most severe winters of the late 1700s, 1800s, and early 1900s. He will also discuss past storms and relate the talk to the current and future climate in Maine.

    The Northeastern Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems (NERACOOS) spans coastal waters from the Canadian Maritime Provinces to the New York Bight. NERACOOS provides weather and ocean data to fishers and commercial shippers determining if conditions are safe for passage and to emergency managers issuing storm warnings. Tom Shyka, Product and Engagement Manager at NERACOOS will talk about weather reporting to ships and interesting weather patterns observed through the NERACOOS buoy data.

    Where in the World is John Worth? John Worth spent his life driving tugs, windjammers, and other workboats on Penobscot Bay. This past year, he took off on a retirement trip, "The Kite" by water; come hear about the ports he visited and the adventures he had traveling up the Hudson, Erie Canal, St. Lawrence, and down the Chambly Canal, through Lake Champlain, and back out the Hudson. Presented in conjunction with the Maine Retired Skippers.
