Kids at Sea/on Land in the 19th Century Camp [Martin Luther King Day]

Ages 5-10, $40/$30 for PMM members

What was life like for the children living in maritime communities in the late 1800s? During this camp, children will discover daily life long ago along Penobscot Bay and on board ships at sea through games, crafts, songs, and (fun) chores.

Registration deadline is January 11th.

Discover lobsters and the lobster industry through a reading of Dahlov Ipcar’s “Lobsterman,” visiting lobster boats on exhibit, trying out “Penny” PMM’s model lobster boat, and more!

After a reading of “Sailing Home” by Gloria Rand, participants will take a special tour of the Ship Captain’s house and discover more about what life at sea was like for children.

Enjoy a story time reading of “Salty Dog” by Gloria Rand. Additional activities will include making an origami boat, sailing it on the model pond, and more.

Beginning with a reading of “Giants in the Land” by Diana Applebaum, participants will also enjoy visiting the logging exhibit, making a scratchboard drawing, and more. Peapod Programs last 30 minutes to an hour.

A 19th century craft program with Alice Seeger. Spinning sheep’s wool and weaving warm coverlets was an essential task for fending off Maine’s winter chill.
