When school is out for Columbus Day, what are the kids going to do? Drop them off at the Penobscot Marine Museum’s day camp all about fish! Through crafts, games, songs, and special exhibit visits, we will explore the fish and other animals living off the Maine Coast. Bring a bag lunch.

What was life like for the children living in maritime communities in the late 1800s? During this camp, children will discover daily life long ago along Penobscot Bay and on board ships at sea through games, crafts, songs, and (fun) chores.

Registration deadline is January 11th.

From Paul Bunyan to Dad’s story about the giant fish that gets bigger with each retelling, Coastal Maine is rich with fish stories and tall tales. During this collaboration between the Penobscot Marine Museum and Neighborhood Arts, participants will start each day at the Museum enjoying stories, crafts, games, and music relating to tall tales. In the afternoon, the participants will cross the street to create their own performance inspired by fish stories and tall tales. On Friday at 4pm, families and the public are invited to attend the performance at Neighborhood Arts. Registration deadline is February 8th.

March 15th, 9am-4pm
Ages 5-10, $40/$30 for PMM members

Participants mix science with arts and crafts and even a little history as they explore the basics of buoyancy. Starting with paper boats, participants will use their creativity to design their own model boats out of a variety of materials. Camp will also include stories, games, and opportunities to float the creations in a basin. Registration deadline is March 8th.

Wednesday, June 19
11am and lasts half an hour to one hour

Find out more about how sailors use knots and how we use knots in our daily lives. Starting with a reading of Look! I Can Tie My Shoes, participants will try out different sailors’ knots, make their own knot jewelry, and go on a scavenger hunt looking for knots around the Museum.

After a reading of Abbie Against the Storm, participants will take a special tour of the Ship Captain’s house, make a lighthouse craft, and conduct a lighthouse experiment.
