Make a Pinhole Camera

Take beautiful photographs with cameras you've made from boxes off the kitchen shelf. It's pure magic! The beautiful, soft-focus images will amaze you. A pinhole camera is a camera without a lens and with a single small aperture, a pinhole. Light from a scene passes through this single point and projects an inverted image on the opposite side of the box where a piece of film or photographic paper is wedged or taped into the other end.

Photographer: Anne-Claude Cotty is an artist and teacher living in Stonington, and is a past education coordinator of the Maine Crafts Association and executive director of the Hancock County Cultural Network.

Hand-painting Black & White Photographs

Create an extraordinary work of art by transforming your black and white photographs using the historic technique of hand-painting. This intensive workshop explores traditional and contemporary methods for hand-painting. Photographs with be provided by the museum or bring your own B&W images, painting materials will be provided.

Artist: Liv Kristin Robinson is a Belfast area fine art photographer, her images are digitally created from start to finish as dye-infused metal prints.

The Maine Frontier: Through the Lens of Isaac Walton Simpson

A moving glimpse of the people and families who carved out a life a hundred years ago in isolated northern Maine. This multi-media presentation combining film, photography, oral history, and live music is based on a recently discovered collection of rare early photographs taken in northern Maine by Isaac Simpson. Made possible by a grant from the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Arts Commission.

Filmmaker Sumner McKane is also a composer, musician, historian, and photographer.

Draw, color, paint and more! Using historic photographs from the Penobscot Marine Museum collection, create your own work of art. Let your imagination and historical images run wild together. Supplies provided.
Artist: M.J. Bronstein, known for her unique painted images and her work with the photographic negative, is author of Photoplay and is an educator at Center for Maine Contemporary Art.

Cost: $5, Free for members. For all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Mike Stein Memorial Painting Raffle Drawing

In memory of Penobscot Marine Museum’s beloved Board Member Dr. Mike Stein, and to celebrate his love of the water and boating, Jerri Finch has donated her beautiful painting West Fork to raise funds in his memory. “The Port Clyde harbor shelters the last small-boat groundfishing fleet between Port Clyde and the Canadian border. In 2009, a group of area fishermen developed the Port Clyde Fresh CatchTM brand to preserve their heritage, their community and the resources they depend on. Using environmentally conscious methods to harvest fish, lobster shrimp and crab, they pioneered the country's first Community Supported Fishery program in 2007.”

Close to the Land & Close to the Sea: The Photography of Kosti Ruohomaa

Many legends surround the Finnish-American photographer Kosti Ruohomaa, the award-winning photo journalist who shot iconic portraits of working Americans which appeared in LIFE, National Geographic, and other publications from 1940 to 1960.

Lecturer: Deanna S. Bonner-Ganter, Curator of Photography, Art, and Archives, Maine State Museum, her biography of Ruohomaa will soon be published by Down East Books.

The Famous Mariners of Deer Isle Discussed at Penobscot Marine Museum

The men of Deer Isle have been famous for their maritime skills for well over a hundred years.  In 1895 and 1899 the America’s Cup was won by all-Deer Isle crews, the first and last time in history a single town supplied an entire crew for the race.  At Penobscot Marine Museum onThursday, October 8 at 7:00 pm, anthropologist William Haviland will discuss why the men of Deer Isle developed such an excellent reputation and were sought after as crewmen especially for the big steam yachts of the early 20th century.  Haviland’s book on the subject,Floating Palaces: America’s Queens of the Sea which he wrote with Deer Isle native Barbara (Greenlaw) Britton, was published this year.  Admission is free.

William Haviland is Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Vermont. Growing up he spent summers on Deer Isle and is now a full-time resident.  He is on the boards of the Deer Isle-Stonington Historical Society and the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor.

Floating Palaces: America’s Queens of the Sea is part of Penobscot Marine Museum’s Boat Talk Series.  The talk will take place on Thursday, October 8, 7:00 pm, at Douglas and Margaret Carver Memorial Art Gallery, 11 Church Street, Searsport, Maine.  Admission is free.

Penobscot Marine Museum Victorian Christmas

The holiday season will be celebrated with Victorian Christmas at Penobscot Marine Museum this year on Friday, December 4th and Saturday, December 5th. The ship captain’s house will be open to the public with each room decorated for a Victorian Christmas by community groups and businesses, including the Congregational Church Women’s Fellowship Group, Searsport Historical Society, Searsport Beautification Committee, Blue Jacket Shipcrafters, Bangor Savings Bank and Searsport Antique Mall. There will be refreshments, music performed by boatbuilder Ralph Stanley and his fiddle group, and volunteers from Searsport’s Carver Library will be reading from 19th Christmas favorites.
