McKenna and Her Camera:

The Midcoast Maine Art Scene: 1987 - 2002

On exhibit at Waterfall Arts June 27 - September 2

with an opening reception on Thursday, June 27, 6-8pm

Beginning in the 1950s, some of America’s best-known artists came to rural midcoast Maine in search of compelling landscapes and drawn by cheap land and a community of like-minded people. Photographer Peggy McKenna moved to Montville in 1972 and soon became a vibrant and beloved part of the community. Her specialties were photojournalism and portraiture. Her reputation among the artists was based on their deep respect for her photographic artistry and many had their portraits made by her.

McKenna’s archive of photographs was donated to the Penobscot Marine Museum in 2015. PMM has partnered with Waterfall Arts to create this exhibition of Peggy’s photos that brilliantly document the faces and personalities of some of the key figures in the midcoast art scene, which had a considerable impact on the history of American art. This exhibit will include 34 of her artist portraits, including Alex Katz, Katherine Bradford, Lois Dodd, Linden Frederick, Yvonne Jacquette, and Rudy Burckhardt. Each portrait will be paired with a work by that artist.

Taking our Reproduction Pulling Boat for a Spin

By Cipperly Good, Richard Saltonstall Jr. Curator of Maritime History

Our good friends at the Traditional Small Craft Association are planning a row around Sears Island on Saturday, June 15th at 10am. There are two launch sites: the Searsport Town Wharf and the Stockton Springs Town Docks. From either direction, we will all plan to meet on the Stockton Springs side of Sears Island for lunch and a talk about the Penobscot Expedition. David Wyman will speak about this ill-fated American attempt during the Revolutionary War to retake Castine’s Fort George from the British. As he will describe, when the American fleet fled the British Navy, one vessel met its end off Sears Island.

Kosti Ruohomaa Collection: June 2024 Rollout

By Matt Wheeler, Digital Collections Curator

Kosti Ruohomaa’s talent as a documentarian was grounded partly in his flexibility—he brought a unique perspective to built and natural landscapes, interiors, and events. Shining throughout all his work, however, is his gift as a portraitist. His connections through the publishing world and other local creatives he befriended gave him opportunities to work with some notable subjects. Thanks to his affinity for ordinary people, he also met and photographed his share of diamonds in the rough. In June, we’re publishing three smaller groups of photos which cover this gamut.

In December of 1949, Kosti met up with an unnamed antique dealer (he might be the Ripley whose name was given to the Rockland antique shop depicted in the photos) as he made his rounds to locals with old goods to sell. He’s a true Maine businessman—pinstripe pants, shirt and tie paired with hunter’s plaid wool outerwear.

Jacob Potofsky is not a household name in the 21st century, but this Russian immigrant lived an American dream. He worked his way into the garment industry as a seamster in a pants factory at age 14; decades later, he became president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America for Chicago. Kosti took only a few photos of this pro-labor diplomat and career trade unionist in 1944.

In February 1945, Ruohomaa visited another principled icon of his day, the journalist Drew Pearson. A book he wrote early in his career cut against the ideological grain of his employer, the Baltimore Sun; he was fired, then wound up carving out a career in radio, as a columnist for the Washington Post, and also as a minor actor in Hollywood films. Pearson presented himself as a crusader against bad faith politics, even provoking President Roosevelt’s accusation that he was a “chronic liar”.
