Maine Women Authors Of The 1950’S

What do the novels of Mary Ellen Chase, Elizabeth Ogilvie, Ruth Moore, Miriam Colwell, and Louise Dickinson Rich tell us about Maine’s sense of place? Author and University of Maine lecturer Sandy Phippen will look at these authors and their rich portraits of Maine’s landscape and way of life. This is the keynote talk for a series of book discussions taking place at five Waldo County Libraries, which will culminate in a panel discussion at PMM on August 18.

The Board of Trustees and the Gala Committee request the pleasure of your company at the 2016 Penobscot Marine Museum Gala, Saturday, July 30 in Northport at Point Lookout's Hedge's Hall.

We are delighted to honor Hodgdon Yachts and the Hodgdon Family in their 200th year of boat building in East Boothbay. The five generations of Hodgdon boat builders is the longest history of a family of boat builders in the USA. 

Cocktails and the silent auction start at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and the live auction at 7:00 p.m. The event is dinner attire with limited reservations.

Captain John Worth of Maine Maritime Academy has worked and taught students aboard tugs on Penobscot Bay over the course of his exciting career. He will share his experiences and discuss the history of assisting cargo ships in the navigation of the Penobscot Bay and River.

Admission free with museum admission.

Sing rousing sea shanties, see capstan and halyard demonstrations, and learn about fo’c’sle songs and shipboard fiddle tunes with Edith Gawler, Bennett Konesni, and the Duckback Farm Worksongers. Edith & Bennett are musicians and worksong scholars who play old-time fiddle and banjo tunes and hollers with musician friends. Edith Gawler grew up in Maine as a member of the legendary Gawler Family Band. A Searsport Heritage Day event.

Sea Captains’ House Tour

Tickets $10, $5 for members.

Searsport is famous for shipbuilding and ship captains. In collaboration with PMM, the owners of the historic houses built by the Captains and shipbuilders between 1860 and 1900 are opening their homes to the public for this very special Historic House Tour. Hear stories about the houses and the captains from the owners themselves. A Searsport Heritage Day event.

Betsy Paradis is the Reference and Special Collections Librarian at the Belfast Free Library and has taught genealogy courses and presented on the topic at libraries around the state and at genealogy conferences.

Maine State Historian Earle Shettleworth, Jr., Maine historian and author William H. Bunting, and Penobscot Marine Museum Photo Archivist Kevin Johnson collaborated on this book about the unique Belfast-based postcard company of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Maine On Glass is published by Tilbury House.
