Globalization Is Not New: Maine’s Merchant Marine in 19th Century World Trade

University of Maine Hutchinson Center 80 Belmont Avenue, Belfast, United States

The topic of the 31st Annual Camden Conference is New World Disorder and America’s Future.  PMM's curator, Cipperly Good, will speak at a Camden Conference-affiliated event about how she understands today's economic globalist from a historic view.

This presentation will use primary source material, artifacts and images from the Penobscot Marine Museum to track the Maine merchant marine in the global market, when Downeasters were the global shippers. For more information call 207-548-2529.

Pictures from the Penobscot Marine Museum tell many stories. The picture on this card was taken in 1894 at the Oddfellows Hall in Belfast (the building now houses Chase’s Daily). We do not know what the men are drinking or why they are peeling apples, but we can have a lot of fun thinking about both, and eating some of the food they might have eaten in 1894 in Belfast, prepared by Chef Evan Mallet in 2018. Please join us for some fun and see more of our photos – old ones of familiar places and some of our newest collection of work by Kosti Ruohomaa that is creating a stir around the state. And as always, Evan’s cooking is the icing on any cake.

Student Designed Mobile Tour Launch

Penobscot Marine Museum 2 Church Street, Searsport, United States

Searsport District Middle School has a good number of students enrolled in the National Junior Honor Society. NJHS president Max Provencher approached the Museum to devise some projects for his fellow students. Working with curator Cipperly Good, the students have picked their favorite objects on exhibit. The mobile tour of their favorites will feature labels about what intrigued the students about the object and photographs that allow visitors to virtually climb into our boats, spin objects 360 degrees, or open up cabinet doors. Those in the area are welcome to attend the launch and interact with the student designers. Bring your smart phone!

A Salty Upbringing: Tales of Maritime Mothers

Merithew and Fowler True Ross Houses Church St., Searsport, United States

A Midcoast Maine mother reared her children at sea or at least close to the water’s edge. In later years, she sent her sons off to be captains and crew and her daughters to be captain’s wives. Hear our troop of young actors tell the tales of the mothers depicted in portraits from the Museum collection and tour our Sea Captain’s home. This program is in partnership with the Searsport District Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society.
