Often, wives and children accompanied these captains. What was life like for these small-town families spending years at sea? What was it like for family members who stayed home during some voyages? Discover the stories of Searsport sailing families in this tour.

When the Penobscot Marine Museum opened for our second season in 1938, one of the paintings exhibited was of the ship GREAT ADMIRAL, on loan to the new museum by a daughter of a former captain. We’ll take a close look at this painting and explore how it was exhibited in 1938.

Climb aboard the beautifully restored ships of North America’s largest fleet of historic schooners, and depart Camden, Maine, to cruise the pristine waters of the Penobscot Bay. With in-depth archival materials and interviews with captains and crew, maritime historians, and passengers, filmmaker Dan Lambert explores the history and evolution of Midcoast Maine’s majestic Windjammers while taking viewers on a voyage that captures the feeling of wind and sea spray and the unique thrill of traveling under sail-power. Following the film will be a panel discussion including the filmmaker Dan Lambert, Chair and Co-Founder of the Sail Power and Steam Museum, and others interviewed for the film or associated with the windjammers. This film is co-hosted by the Sail Power and Steam Museum.

Through the variety of programs at Penobscot Marine Museum, Education Director Jeana Ganskop tells stories, preferably based on fact, and even better when we have related objects, photographs, and documents! During this Member Monday, Jeana will discuss the research that goes into planning this year’s Twilight Tours. She will share the story of the bark TROVATORE hit by a waterspout, the wreck of the ship ELIZABETH, and more. Come to see the real items related to these stories, then see the stories brought to life by volunteer actors during Twilight Tours on October 15th. Purchase tickets to Twilight Tours here.

Hemp has played a vital role in our history, including maritime history. It was a part of daily life until the mid-20th century. This session will explore the history of Cannabis Sativa as an agricultural and industrial product, as well as understanding the difference in the types of cannabis such as marijuana.
